One of the most essential parts of a local community is its newspaper. The news not only informs, but connects people in a way large, national publications can’t.

For some time now, the Aberdeen American News has left its readers without local content due to its lack of staff — my job as the new editor is to get it back to telling the stories of Aberdeen and Brown County.

I want to thank our sports reporter Roger Merriam for his work to ensure that American News readers weren’t left entirely without local stories.

In my new position, I am the editor of The Aberdeen American News, The Watertown Public Opinion and The St. Cloud Times in Minnesota. While I run papers in Minnesota and South Dakota, I am a life-long resident of Michigan.

I grew up in southeast Michigan, moved to mid-Michigan to attend Central Michigan University, then went further north after graduation to work for a local paper in Petoskey, before finding my way back downstate last spring.

As a journalist, local stories is what I am passionate about writing. I started out as a student reporter and editor at Central Michigan Life, the student-run newspaper at CMU. After graduation I took a job as the business, non-profit and environment reporter for the Petoskey News-Review — where I won multiple awards from the Michigan Press Association and Associated Press Media Editors.

After living in northern Michigan for a year with my boyfriend of eight years, the homesickness got to us, so we packed up our apartment and cats and moved back downstate to be closer to our families.

I took a job at the Livingston Daily Press and Argus as the crime and public safety reporter, a job I loved and fully expected to stay with for several years, but when the opportunity for editor came up, I couldn’t refuse it.

Having now worked in multiple markets around the midwest, I have realized that, while local communities can differ quite a bit, the people that live in those communities share a similar love for their area.

My favorite part of being a journalist is getting to know each area and the people that live there and I am incredibly excited to learn more about Aberdeen.
