Ford has unveiled its all-electric Mustang Mach-E in Los Angeles, a crossover SUV inspired by its classic 55 -year-old sports coupe.

Taking several distinctive styling cues from the Mustang, like the head and tail lights, muscular curves and coupé-inspired lines, Ford also promises the Mach-E will carry a Mustang-like punch in performance terms, especially on the later GT version, which could offer 0-62mph in less than than five seconds. Like the Mustang, it will also carry the famous pony emblem on the nose and rear, instead of Ford’s blue oval.

It’s a big deal for Ford, which has spent a long time getting this right. The company has created a new platform to build it on and is investing heavily in developing electric and hybrid vehicles for the new era.

Harnessing the popularity of the Mustang name offers the kind of box office appeal that Ford hopes will convince customers to go electric, at what feels like a tipping point for the industry.

“This purpose-built all-electric vehicle is unique, but still unmistakably a Mustang, and it’s coming at exactly the right time for customers in Europe,” said Stuart Rowley, president of Ford Europe.

Hitting UK roads at the end of 2020, Ford has recruited Idris Elba to help get the word out and Elon Musk has already tweeted his congratulations, despite this looking like a genuine rival to the Tesla Model 3 as well as other electric crossovers like the Jaguar I PACE.
