IN November 2017, Francis Suarez became the first Miami-born mayor. Suarez attended both undergrad and law school in Florida, and he is a member of the law firm Greenspoon Marder. Prior to his election, Suarez served as a Miami commissioner. The father of two, he says he’s proud to be raising children his home city.

Men's Health chatted with Suarez for our recent story, "50 States of Fit."

What's the most urgent public health issue facing your city?

Obesity is a huge issue in our country and in our city. If you’re not taking care of yourself, not dieting appropriately, you’re not putting your health and wellness as a priority. While I was commissioner, we worked to get kids more active. We would go to inner city parks. We would bring police and fire and we would have intramural basketball games, boot camp style training, and flag football. All kinds of after school activities. And that for me is going to be a point of emphasis as mayor.

What does it mean for your city to be "healthy"?

Physical health permeates so much of what we do every day. Getting adequate sleep, eating right, staying fit; these are all things that influence our decision making and influence our ability to deal with stress. We live in a very stressful, high-paced world. Miami is a very fast city. Being physically healthy helps with mental wellness and mental health. It helps with the daily rigors of our careers and it helps with your family life as well.

Favorite exercise:

CrossFit. I like it because it has a little bit of everything. It has gymnastics, it has a Olympic lifting, and it has cardiovascular. It's a great sweat. It doesn't take too much time. And you don't have to think; you go to the class and the workouts are programed for you.

Go-to healthy snack:

Protein shakes with creatine and unsaturated fats. I drink that once or twice a day.

Song to work out to:
