Linda Goolsbee, a Democrat seeking the District 71 seat in the Texas House of Representatives, is having a meet-and-greet event from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Abilene Woman's Club, 3425 South 14th St.
Economics, business and political science students from Abilene's three four-year universities have been invited. There is no cost, and it's open to the public.
Introduction of the candidate will be made by Austan Goolsbee, her son. An economist and writer, he is the Robert P. Gwinn Professor of Economics at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business. He formerly served as the chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers from 2010-11 and as a member of President Barack Obama's Cabinet.
Linda Goolsbee will speak briefly afterward.
She is taking on incumbent Republican Stan Lambert for the District 71 seat that covers Jones, Nolan and Taylor counties.
Election Day is Nov. 8; early voting begins Oct. 24.
Beto, Willie and the boys
Singer Willie Nelson will join Beto O'Rourke, the Democratic Party candidate for governor, at a Vote 'Em Out rally at 2 p.m. Sunday in Austin.
Nelson will speak and perform at the event at Moontower Saloon, 10212 Menchaca Road.
The public is invited.
O'Rourke is running against incumbent Republican Greg Abbott.
