Meet the new grey seal pup born at Brookfield Zoo

BROOKFIELD, Ill. — Brookfield Zoo announced the birth of an adorable grey seal pup Friday.

The male pup, who hasn’t been named yet, was born on Feb. 17 and weighed 25 pounds at birth.

He will remain behind the scenes for the next month and a half with his 11-year-old mother Georgette, aka “Georgie.”

It’s Georgie’s first time experiencing motherhood since she came over to the zoo in 2020. She was not released back into the wild due to being blind in her left eye and functionally blind in her right eye.

Brookfield Zoo has six of the 22 grey seals across seven zoos and aquariums in the country.

Staff has modified a pool to make it easy for the baby seal to practice swimming.

He won’t be as small in a few weeks. Brookfield Zoo said a grey seal mother’s milk is extremely rich in fat and it is not unusual for the pup to gain several pounds a day.

They said he can easily gain 100 pounds over the next few weeks while nursing. The zoo will be posting the pup’s progress on social media.
