Jamie Butler of Newcomerstown grew up with five brothers, and that because there always were adventures, she knew she had to be tough enough to survive them.

But, she said that what she values most about life at home with mom Tracy Campbell; stepdad Leonard Campbell; and brothers Mike, David and Mark Campbell, Curtis Gipe and Adam Eckelberry is the family connection. She said they’d sit down to dinner every night, went to church as a family every Sunday, and said prayers in the evening before bed.

She said there also were board games and much more fun.

Butler is a 2003 graduate of Newcomerstown High School, and received a bachelor of science in nursing from Malone College in 2007. From 2002 to 2007, worked as a state tested nursing assistant (STNA) at Coshocton Hospital. After receiving her degree, Butler worked as an RN in the Coshocton Hospital emergency department. In 2016, she moved on to the ER at Southeastern Med in Cambridge, where she worked until she received her master’s degree from Malone University and became a family nurse practitioner. After that, she joined Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Family Medicine in Dover.

Butler’s husband, Steve, also was born and raised in Newcomerstown. They have three children, Blair, 18; Drake 11; and Harper, 4. Two silver labs – Samson, 3; and Silo, 9 months – complete the family.

Here, Butler discusses her career in medicine:

WHEN DID YOU KNOW YOU WANTED TO BE INVOLVED IN HEALTH CARE? – I have always had a passion for helping people. In the Emergency Room, I assisted people with immediate needs or for acute reasons. I loved the ER arena, but eventually developed a passion for serving people in a different way, and that is why I continued to further my education and am now more involved in the preventative side of the patient’s health.

TELL US WHERE YOU ARE LOCATED AND WHAT SERVES ARE OFFERED – The Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital Family Medicine office I work at is located directly across from the Dover Buehler’s, off the Schneider’s Crossing exit. This office offers both family practice as well as urgent care. I am on the family practice side and see patients of all ages from newborn to 100, and support mental health, physical health and preventative care (wellness). We have a lab and x-ray department on site, which is beneficial, so that our patients can receive these basic services in one place. We also provide walk-in clinic hours Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., further providing access for our patients to be seen. I, and some other providers in the office, perform procedures such as skin biopsies, suturing, women’s health (pap smears), joint injections, (incision and drainage), wound care and other services.  We value patient satisfaction.  For the 14th straight quarter, the Union Hospital Medical offices recorded aggregate patient experience scores above the 95th percentile, ending the first quarter of this year at the 97th percentile overall. Three of our offices scored in the 99th percentile.

WHAT WOULD PEOPLE BE SURPRISED TO KNOW ABOUT YOU? – Those who do not know me personally may be surprised to hear I love sports, love getting muddy and love the outdoors. We own a 4-seater RZR and like going to Hatfield/McCoy trails in West Virginia. We recently purchased a boat so that we can enjoy the lake life. I can also hula-hoop and juggle all at the same time.

WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT? – Sandra Bodnar, one of my Diversified Health Occupations teachers at Buckeye Career Center in New Philadelphia, was a special mentor of mine. She really motivated me to further my career in the health field and guided me through the steps to get here. We still stay connected, and I am thankful for her support. I also would like to highlight that every student has the opportunity to succeed and pursue higher education, even those from small towns. Health care, in itself, offers so many opportunities. Finally, I loved being raised in a small town. Newcomerstown has shaped me into the person I am today. That is why I chose to raise my kids here. Going to the grocery store, people know me and my children by name and offer them a little treat. I have witnessed so many times our town coming together for others in their time of need. Newcomerstown is family!
