What We Tested This Week: Kumana Avocado Sauce
Who This Is Perfect for: Anyone who loves avocados but is sick of paying extra for guac
Tired of paying that extra $2 for guacamole on your burrito? We feel you!
As a serious guacamole lover, the quest to not only find decent avocados in New York (and not petrified dragon eggs), but also to not pay a damn arm and leg for them, has seemed a nearly impossible feat. But then I found this amazing avocado-based hot sauce that I can put on literally anything to get my avo fix, and my condiment game has forever changed.
Enter: Piquant, delicious, HASS-KICKING Kumana Avocado Sauce.
Inspired by a beloved Venezuelan staple called Guasacaca, Kumana Avocado Sauce is basically an avocado-based green salsa that tastes delicious on grilled steak, burritos, veggies, eggs — you name it. Made with ripe avocados, cilantro, jalapeños, onions, bell peppers, herbs, and spices, Kumana is plant-based, sugar-free, made with non-GMO ingredients, and oh yeah ... it's also the first shelf-stable avocado sauce of its kind.
The story behind Kumana is also worth mentioning, since this hot sauce has roots. Cofounder Francisco Pavan grew up in Venezuela, where avocado-based sauces were often added to family meals, most commonly served alongside grilled meats and barbecue. After working in finance and car sales, Pavan switched gears and founded his own brand, Kumana, to share with the world his love of food and a recipe from his homeland.
I've tried a fair amount of avocado-based hot sauces that are watery, made with way too much vinegar, or are just altogether forgettable. The first time I tried Kumana, I was blown away by the freshness of its ingredients and its depth of flavor. This slightly tart, slightly spicy flavor is probably best described as piquant. Cilantro and parsley add grassy and herbaceous freshness, jalapeños add subtle but not overwhelming heat, and the whole thing is rounded out by creamy avocado purée.
I'm not lying when I say I want to put this hot sauce on e v e r y t h i n g.
In addition to the O.G. Be Original blend, Kumana also comes in a slightly sweet mango flavor called Be Sweet that reminds me of a chutney and tastes awesome on rice dishes, as well as a habanero-infused spicy variety called Be Hot that tastes dopest on tacos.
They are all seriously delicious and versatile enough to use on everything from eggy brunch dishes to burrito bowls, pan-fried Brussels sprouts, grilled steak, and beyond. If you're in the market for a vibrant new hot sauce to try this spring, try Kumana.
