Meet longtime Canton Repository staff writer Malcolm Hall

Local journalism requires local journalists. Every couple of weeks, we will spotlight Canton Repository staff members who serve the Stark County community.

I am native of Springfield, Ohio. I have been a reporter for the Canton Repository for 43 years. My assigned coverage area is eastern and southern Stark County, which includes communities such as Minerva, Louisville, Canton Township and East Canton. Also, my coverage area takes in parts of Carroll County.

I write about everything from political activities to education to business development.

Why I became a journalist

From my childhood, I always enjoyed writing and reading. As I grew older, what I engaged in evolved. I went from comic books to sports magazines to newspapers and news magazines.

My dream as a teenager was to become a sports broadcaster (because I was not much good as an athlete). I outgrew that and focused on being a news reporter. I was a teenager during the Watergate era, and news reporting was a big draw then.

What I like most about my job

Being among the first to be at the scene of an event. I enjoy having the responsibility of interpreting what is occurring and relaying the significance of it to the public.

My favorite story or stories that I've worked on

I really do not have a favorite story because if I suggest one, then later I will recall another story that will stand out beyond the one I mentioned.

I will say I most enjoy working on stories about development projects, be it economic or residential.

The biggest challenge that I face

Understanding the communities and people that I encounter. Sometimes, I find myself in communities that might be different from what I am accustomed to. It can be a challenge to suppress personal feelings and be totally impartial to what you are dealing with.

What I like to do when I am not working

I enjoy gardening. Of course, this is a warm weather hobby unless you have indoor plants. I like to work with nature and watch things grow and mature.

I also enjoy reading, particularly history.
