Meet the register of deeds and clerk of court

Oct. 5—Every four years, voters get a chance to review the performance of elected courthouse officials whose duties are far more administrative than political.

These important but often overlooked positions are the Clerk of Court, the Register of Deeds and the Tax Collector.

There is a contested race for the tax collector, and these candidates will be profiled in a future story. Neither incumbent in the Clerk of Court Hunter Plemmons, nor the Register of Deeds Sherri Rogers, has a challenger this year.

These candidates were asked to share a bit about themselves and their views on their work. Here are the responses.

Hunter Plemmons, Clerk of Court

Plemmons, 39, Democrat, has been serving as clerk of court since 2017 and was an attorney prior to that.

Community activities: Youth volunteer and praise team leader at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church; board member and secretary, Haywood Pathways Center; Waynesville Youth League basketball coach; member of State Employees Credit Union Advisory Board

Reason for seeking public office: My wife and I were both born and raised in Haywood County and are now raising our two young sons here. It is an honor and privilege to serve the people of Haywood County. Public service is my calling. Along with my dedicated staff of 21 assistant and deputy clerks, we strive to serve our community with respect and professionalism. The proper functioning of the Clerk's office is critical to our system of justice.

Sherri C. Rogers, Haywood County Register of Deeds

Rogers, 56, Democrat, has been the register of deeds since 2009.

Community activities: Member, Encouraging Word Baptist Church; Salvation Army Board 2012 — current; Mountain Credit Union board of directors; Haywood Community College advisory board.

Reason for seeking public office: I am seeking my fourth term as the Haywood County Register of Deeds. My extensive experience and knowledge of the essential duties of this position, along with the privilege of serving all the citizens of Haywood County, are the primary reasons I serve as your registrar. I strictly adhere to N.C. General Statutes and manage this office with the utmost integrity and fiscal responsibility. I utilize the latest technology to make our public records readily available, while also maintaining and protecting all records archived in the office.
