You probably noticed another new byline recently in your Florida Times-Union or on Jacksonville.com.

This month we welcomed Hanna Holthaus as a watchdog reporter covering city government. She fills the position that opened when Christopher Hong left last year.

Hanna arrives at an important time, during this election season and before next year’s city elections. She will work closely with veteran reporter David Bauerlein, as you might have noticed last week when they both covered Mayor Lenny Curry’s eighth and final budget address.

Making a difference: Here's how Times-Union journalism, with your support, makes a difference in Northeast Florida

Hanna comes to Jacksonville most recently from Washington D.C., where she was finishing up her Master of Arts in Journalism and Public Affairs, with an international specialty, from American University. She earlier received her Bachelor of Arts in Global Journalism and in Spanish from Webster University.

Her experience includes working with The Washington Post investigative team as a graduate reporter through American University. She also worked as an intern at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and Riverfront Times. And as many journalists have done, she worked for her college newspaper.

We’re looking forward to Hanna helping us cover City Hall and related issues. If you have an idea to share with Hanna about a possible story, please email her at hholthaus@jacksonville.com.

Jaguars reporter John Reid departs for teaching job

As excited as we are to welcome Hanna, we’re sad to say goodbye to another reporter.

This month Jaguars reporter John Reid left the Times-Union to become a teacher. He announced July 18 that he was going to be a social science teacher at a charter school on the Northside where he grew up. He said he wants to lead students to their potential.

We will miss John, who joined us in 2017, not just for his Jaguars coverage. He also provided important news coverage, including looking at the food deserts in Northwest Jacksonville. His work helped lead to a city program to help get residents to grocery stores.

Still, John’s heart has always been in this community, so I’m excited to see him find another way to give back to it.

We are currently searching for a new Jaguars reporter.
