Meet the top 10 students in Brockton High School's Class of 2023

BROCKTON − Brockton High School's Class of 2023 graduated during the school's 157th graduation exercise ceremonies at Marciano Stadium on Saturday, June 3.

These are the top 10 students in the graduating class.

The following student biographies were submitted by Brockton High School. 

Mckenzie Quinn

Mckenzie Quinn is valedictorian of the Brockton High School Class of 2023. A two-sport athlete and leader on the track and field team, Mckenzie was the first female in Boxer football history to score a touchdown. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and Classical and Modern Languages Honor Society. Mckenzie will attend Stanford University in the fall.

Sofiyat Bello

Sofiyat Bello is salutatorian of the Brockton High School Class of 2023. Sofiyat was vice president of National Honor Society, president of the Chinese Chapter of the Classical and Modern Languages Honor Society, the Rifle Line and Uniform Inspector for the Brockton High School Color Guard, a member of Envirothon and the BHS Drama Club, and was a student advisor for the BPS Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Sofiyat was a research and evaluation intern at the Museum of Science in Boston, a member of the Mass Mentoring Youth Leadership Council, a USC Bovard Scholar, and earned a Seal of Biliteracy in Yoruba. She will attend Harvard University in the fall with a double major in neuroscience and computer science.

MacKenzie Gomes

MacKenzie Gomes was founder of Dungeons and Dragons Club, as well as a member of the National Honor Society, Classical and Modern Language Honor Society, Gay Straight Alliance, Talent Search, Coding and Cyber Robotics Club, Interact Club, Drama Club, and STEM program. MacKenzie will study biochemistry at American University in the fall.

Alyssa Labady

Alyssa Labady was vice president of the Latin Honor Society, a peer mediator, a Latin tutor, ambassador for the Vocational and Career Education program, a member of the track and field team, and a member of National Honor Society and the Boxer Buddies program. Alyssa will attend Boston University, where she will study biology.

Marcel McLaren

Marcel McLaren was a member of the Brockton High School Concert Choir, Harmonics and Drama Club. He participated in senior districts for two years and performed at the American Choral Directors Association National Conference. A cast member in the high school’s three most recent musicals, Marcel portrayed Sky in the spring production of Mamma Mia! He was also a member of the National Honor Society, the Classical and Modern Languages Honor Society, and the Boxers Diving Team. Marcel will attend Howard University, where he will study musical theatre.

Jahir Tineo Castillo

Jahir Tineo Castillo was president of Latin American Student Organization and of the Classical and Modern Language Honor Society. He was also a youth intern at ALPHA Immigration Agency, equity intern at the grassroots organization Equity Now and Beyond, representative for Mayor’s Youth Council, a student ambassador for the BPS Office of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, a Spanish interpreter and tutor, a member of the National Honor Society, and Varsity Tennis Captain. Jahir will study government and politics at Harvard University.

Abigail Bertocchi

Abigail Bertocchi was the student representative for the Brockton School Committee, a CNA student in the high school’s NAT program, a member of the Boxers Softball team, a community softball coach, and a volunteer at the Rose Conservatory in Brockton. Abigail will attend UMass-Amherst, where she will major in biology on the pre-med track.

Jessica Tran Nguyen

Jessica Tran Nguyen was president of the Art Club, co-founder of the K-Pop Club and Dance Team, vice president of the Asian Club, and a member of both the DECA program and National Honor Society. Jessica will study business administration at the University of Southern California and aspires to a career in the sustainable fashion industry and philanthropy.

Martin Kariuki

Martin Kariuki was assistant stage manager and part of the set design crew for the BHS Drama Club, secretary of both the National Honor Society and the Boxer Voice newspaper, Vice President of the BHS Math Club, statistician for the Varsity Girls Volleyball Team, and a freshman mentor and tutor. He also participated in Envirothon and the MLSC Apprenticeship Challenge. Martin will attend the University of Pennsylvania, where he will major in public health and minor in cell and molecular biology under the pre-dental track.

Zaire Andrade

Zaire Andrade was a 2022 Forsyth Institute Student Scholars Summer Intern and participated in the High School Apprenticeship Challenge, including one semester as a teacher’s assistant. Interested in pursuing a career in computer science, Zaire intends to take a gap year prior to attending university.
