New mega fitness center expected to open off New Circle Road later this year

The area around Southland Christian Church off of New Circle and Richmond Roads will soon be getting a new tenant.

Construction is underway on a 28,000 square foot Planet Fitness between Advanced Auto Parts and the Home Depot along New Circle Road.

Mike Hamilton, chief operations officer for Planet Fitness Midwest, said the new gym will be the franchisee’s third gym in Lexington. The others are off of Bryan Station Road and Nicholasville Road.

The new gym will have all of the typical amenities with more than 100 pieces of cardio equipment including treadmills, spin bikes, elliptical machines, rowers, recumbent and spin bikes. There will be plenty of strength equipment including free weights, smith machines and other equipment.

The location also will include a Black Card Spa that will have tanning rooms, massage chairs, hydro massage chairs and a cryotherapy, or extreme cold, bed chamber.

It also will feature a Relax Space Wellness Pod, a type of guided meditation designed to help people relax, and total body enhancement therapy which uses non-ultraviolet red light therapy to help with muscle recovery and injuries.

Construction started in April. The gym hopes to be open in December, Hamilton said.

“The gym will be 24 hours during the week and 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday,” Hamilton said.

There will be sales on new memberships prior to the opening, he said.

The Southland Christian Church Richmond Road campus, the site of a former mall, has multiple retail and restaurant spaces at the sprawling campus accessible by Richmond and New Circle roads.

Planet Fitness was founded in 1982 in Dover, N.H. The low-cost gym has more than 2,400 locations in the United States, Canada, Mexico and Panama, according to its website.
