The Mega Millions lottery jackpot was an estimated $1.58 billion with a cash option of $783.3 million for Tuesday night's record-high drawing, according to the Mega Millions website.

Tuesday's jackpot is the largest Mega Millions ever eclipsing the previous record of $1.537 billion, won in 2018.

The jackpot is the third-largest U.S. lottery jackpot ever, trailing only two Powerball jackpots that reached $2.04 billion in 2022 and $1.586 billion in 2016 (see charts below).

The jackpot was last won on April 18 when someone in East Syracuse, New York won a $20 million jackpot and was also won on April 14 when a lottery player in Ozone Park, New York won a $483 million jackpot.

Meanwhile, the Powerball jackpot is at $170 million for Wednesday's drawing with a cash option of $83.4 million, according to the Powerball website.

A lottery player's trip to the Publix supermarket in Neptune Beach, Florida resulted in a record $1.602 billion Mega Millions jackpot win in Tuesday's drawing. The final jackpot was higher than advertised due to higher than expected sales.

In addition to the grand prize winner, seven tickets matched all five white balls to win million-dollar prizes. Two tickets sold in Florida and North Carolina had the Megaplier to win $2 million, while tickets sold in Pennsylvania, Texas (2) and West Virginia all won $1 million. A ticket sold in California, which bases its second-tier prizes on sales in the state, won $3,383,371.

How do I play Mega Millions?

The cost is $2 per ticket, but you can add the Megaplier for $1, which will increase the amount of your potential prize up to five times the original prize (except for the jackpot).

Each player selects five numbers from 1 to 70 for the white balls and one number from 1 to 25 for the Mega Ball. However, you can also have the lottery machine generate a random Quick Pick for you. You don't need to be a U.S. citizen or a resident a particular state where you purchase your ticket.

Where can I play Mega Millions?

You can play the game in 45 states plus the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The states not offering Mega Millions are: Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah.

Many grocery stores, gas stations and convenience stores sell lottery tickets. Some states allow Mega Millions tickets to be purchased online, but beware of scam websites. Check with your state lottery for more details.

The Mega Millions website does not carry the drawing live like the Powerball site does, but it does post the video on its YouTube channel following the drawing.

What does cash option mean?

The major lotteries in the United States offer two jackpot payout options: annuity and cash.

The annuity option is paid out over time. There is an immediate payment and then 29 annual payments after that, increasing by 5% each year. The cash option is significantly lower than the advertised jackpot, but it is paid in a lump sum. You don't have to wait decades for all the money.
