Meghan Markle Didn’t Open Gifts at Her Baby Shower for This Sweet Reason

Meghan Markle recently made her way to New York City — reportedly her first trip back to the US since her May 2018 wedding to Prince Harry — for a baby shower thrown by some of her closest friends. Since the visit wasn’t part of her official royal duties, Kensington Palace is staying mum on the details. But fortunately for us, Gayle King was one of the guests and is happy to share what went down.

The shower, which took place at the Mark Hotel on Manhattan’s Upper East Side on Wednesday, February 20, was put together by Markle’s good friends Serena Williams and Jessica Mulroney, as well as the duchess’ longtime best friend, Genevieve Hillis, according to King. Guests brought gifts, but the former Suits star opted to wait to unwrap them.

“She didn’t open any of the gifts, because she wants to do that when her and Harry are back together,” King revealed to her colleagues on CBS This Morning on Thursday, February 21.

Instead, Markle and her guests spent time making floral arrangements to later be donated to charity. “She’s a very private person … but I hope she won’t mind me sharing this because I’ve never seen anything like this at a baby shower,” King said.

The flower arrangements were distributed by Repeat Roses, an organization that recycles flowers for use in hospitals and other care centers. According to People, the celebrity-made pieces from Markle’s shower were donated to pediatric cancer patients at Ronald McDonald House Charities of New York.

“I thought that was a very sweet thing. I mean, it just speaks to who she is,” King continued. “She’s very kind. She’s very generous, and a really, really sweet person.”

King added that a good time was had by all at the event, which was kept to around just 20 of Markle’s closest friends, including her former Suits costar Abigail Spencer and Amal Clooney. “It was a very, very small, private affair, and just a very special time for her,” King said on CBS This Morning. “Because having a baby is a great thing. Let’s not lose sight of that.”
