  • Meghan Markle reportedly took a two-hour lesson in drinking tea and handling a fork and knife before meeting the queen.

  • Meghan apparently “enjoyed it so much that she wanted to come back.”

Before Meghan Markle was duchess-ing around the world doing duchess-y things and being a duchess, she was a regular person like the rest of us. In other words, she didn’t just wake up one day and know all the ins and outs of royal protocol—like how to sit, how to curtsy, and how TF to drink tea in front of the queen.

But apparently, Meghan did her best to learn the customs of Prince Harry’s casual and not-at-all-intimidating family and even signed up for tea lessons with Edmund Fry, a London-born etiquette expert who runs the Rose Tree Cottage tea room in Pasadena, California. According to a report from Daily Mail, the lessons lasted two full hours and covered everything from how to “handle” a fork to how to drink tea the right way. (Help, am I doing it wrong?)

“She enjoyed it so much that she wanted to come back,” Fry said of the lesson with Meghan. “The younger generation doesn’t know what bone china is and certainly doesn’t know anything about how to handle a cup and saucer or how to handle a knife and fork.”

“They come to us mainly to find out, ‘What should we do, as we are having this social event?’” Fry continued. “The same sort of thing happened with Meghan. She knew she would be having tea with the queen. Here, they really do not know what to do. What we have found is that we give them a little information if they are interested and watch what happens.”

Guess Meghan—who made the reservation under a friend’s name—came away with all the info an aspiring duchess could possibly need, because now she and the queen have tea on the regular and no one has reported on her mishandling a fork, so!
