- Meghan Markle has responded to Jay-Z and Beyoncé's BRITs tribute to her with a single telling emoji.
- The couple gave a brilliant nod to the Duchess of Sussex during their acceptance speech, which saw them stood in front of a Mona Lisa-esque painting of Meghan.
Cast your minds back to February 2019, and you might remember Meghan Markle's unlikely appearance at the BRIT Awards. No, she didn't crop up for an impromptu singalong, but was part of Jay-Z and Beyoncè's acceptance speech for Best International Group.
The Carters couldn't attend the ceremony at the O2 in London, so they sent a video message acceptance speech. In it, the couple recreated their 'Apeshit' music video, where they were casually hanging out in the Louvre in front of the Mona Lisa. Only instead of Leonardo da Vinci's painting, they were standing in front of a portrait of Meghan Markle in a crown.
Beyoncé later took to Instagram to thank the Brits for the award, and to explain the meaning behind the Meghan Markle portrait. She wrote:
"Thank you to the Brits for the award for Best International Group. I won this award back in 2002 with my besties, Kelly and Michelle. How lucky am I to have been in a group with my other best friend, the GOAT Hova. 🙌🏾 In honour of Black History Month, we bow down to one of our Melanated Monas. Congrats on your pregnancy! We wish you so much joy. [sic]"
The Telegraph say 'Melanated Monas' is a reference to the Duchess of Sussex's biracial heritage as well as one of the world's most famous paintings, the Mona Lisa.
Now, over three months later, we have a rough idea of how Meghan felt about the whole thing. Her close confidant and makeup artist Daniel Martin revealed in the CBS special Meghan and Harry Plus One that aired on 17 May, "I sent her a pic. I think it was a screen grab of the two of them in front of the portrait. I think all I wrote was, 'Girl,'.
"She wrote me back like the big eye emoji."
👀 You mean this one? The slightly shocked, gossipy one? So telling.
