From Town & Country

  • In January, the Sussexes announced their plans to step back from their senior positions in the royal family.

  • After a farewell tour of engagements in the UK, Meghan has returned to Canada, and to baby Archie.

  • Here's what else Meghan has been doing since the announcement.

Early January began like any other for the royals—most of the family were still on their winter holiday but some were beginning to return to engagements. After an extended break in Canada, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle made their first appearance of 2020 at Canada House in London to thank the North American country for its hospitality during their recent stay there.

But everything changed quickly on Wednesday, January 8, when Harry and Meghan made a shocking announcement about their intentions to "step back" from their "senior" position within the royal family and to "carve out a progressive new role within [the institution]."

Here's what's Meghan has been doing since then.

Following a period of negotiations, Harry and Meghan's roles moving forward have become more defined.

In their initial announcement, Harry and Meghan made it clear that they intended to continue representing the Queen, while also pursuing opportunities in the private sector. That half-in, half-out status was not approved by the rest of the royal family when the announcement went public, and it was eventually deemed unsustainable. Now, after a series of negotiations, the Sussexes' post-working royal roles have become more defined.

Notably, while Harry and Meghan will retain their His and Her Royal Highness titles, they will no longer actively use them. They will also give up the use of the brand name Sussex Royal. But they will have the freedom to earn private income and to operate without approval from Buckingham Palace.

Following the announcement Meghan has been living in Canada.

She has largely kept a low profile over the past few weeks, but did visit a few women's empowerment organizations in Vancouver. Those visits were subsequently shared on social media.

Ahead of their final transition out of their senior royal roles, Harry and Meghan returned to the UK.

The royals undertook a number of engagements, both public and private in something of a "farewell tour." Some, like their attendance at the Endeavour Fund Awards, Mountbatten Music Festival, and the annual Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey, were joint appearances, while others—including Meghan's emotional meeting with students from around the Commonwealth at Buckingham Palace and Harry's recording session with Jon Bon Jovi at Abbey Road Studios—were solo events.

Meghan is now back in Canada with baby Archie.

On March 31, Harry and Meghan will officially transition out of their positions as senior members of the royal family.
