It’s been awhile since Meghan McCain made headlines.

Now a headline — and the accompanying column — have her back again.

It did seem kind of quiet around here, no?

McCain, the former co-host of “The View,” daughter of the late Sen. John McCain and the author of the audiobook “Bad Republican,” sounded like a good Republican in her stinging criticism of President Joe Biden’s administration’s COVID-19 response after she and her husband contracted the virus.

She writes a column for DailyMail.com, the online version of the British tabloid. Here’s the headline on her latest column, published Wednesday:

“MEGHAN MCCAIN: I finally got Covid and it was so horrible it made me doubt if America will ever recover from this pandemic. It WILL but not with moronic Biden in charge.”

McCain and Domenech are 'fully vaccinated,' she says

In the column, McCain chronicles her experience with COVID-19. Both she and her husband, conservative writer and pundit Ben Domenech, contracted the virus despite being “fully vaccinated,” she said.

She goes on to express frustration with the lack of available at-home tests, the difficulty of caring for their 15-month-old daughter and says that the effects of the virus on both her and Domenech were much more serious than she thought.

“I do not want to sound like a baby, or ungrateful because I am well aware of how much worse things could have been,” she writes, “but Covid was much rougher than I anticipated given that we are fully-vaccinated.

“What I experienced wasn't mild, it wasn't easy, and I am still fearful of the unknown long-term side effects that I may experience.”

But it’s something she wrote farther down that had her trending on Twitter on Thursday morning:

“It was easy for the media to — rightfully — blame Trump for the bungling of the early Covid-19 response, but Biden and his feckless, moronic, isolated Titanic of an administration gets the blame now.”

A conservative blaming Biden isn’t exactly news. Some people blame him if their coffee is served too cold. Thanks, Biden! The same was true with Trump. It’s an occupational hazard when you’re president. And a lot of people are frustrated with the lack of available testing and the continuing surge of cases.

The Biden and McCain families are typically portrayed as friendly

What is noteworthy about McCain’s criticism — she also reveals that she voted for neither Biden nor Trump in the 2020 election — is that the McCain and Biden families are typically portrayed as close friends. Many people posted footage of Biden comforting McCain on “The View” when she returned to the show after the death of her father.

And Biden appointed Cindy McCain, Meghan’s mother, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Agencies for Food and Agriculture; she was confirmed in October.

Meghan McCain’s spokesman did not return a request for comment.

None of this is to say that McCain isn’t free to criticize Biden or anyone else over anything she wants. She certainly is. Also, while McCain wrote the column, headlines are often written by editors — and it’s the headline where Biden is called a moronic. In the column she calls the administration moronic.

A small thing, maybe, but not inconsequential.

But the word “moronic,” wherever it's used and whoever used it, is definitely striking. Not surprising, exactly — McCain isn’t known for holding back. Her Twitter bio leads off with “rabble rouser.” She roused some rabble with this.
