Meghan McCain, Joy Behar clash on 'The View' over 'send her back' chant at Trump rally

Meghan McCain and Joy Behar are sparring over politics yet again.

The conflict erupted during a discussion on "The View" this week about President Donald Trump's Wednesday rally in North Carolina.

At the rally, attendees chanted "send her back" after President Donald Trump criticized Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn. The Sunday before, Trump tweeted "'Progressive' Democrat Congresswomen" should "go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came."

McCain said she took issue with the incident.

"This I do think is one of those moments, much like Charlottesville, that will stand in memory," McCain said. "And my answer to Democrats is, 'If you can't beat this, what are you doing?' Because this shouldn't be this hard to beat."

McCain further condemned the chant and tweet as racist.

"I'm just saying, this is so bad. It's like nothing I've ever seen, and I don't think anyone in this room, has ever seen before," she said. "If you can't beat this, which is blatant racism, what does it say about your party?"

Behar, 76, disagreed, arguing Trump expressed racism in 2016 and still won then.

"I must take issue with that, because when he was running, he was blatantly racist, and he won," she said.

McCain, 34, said Trump's comments reflect a more intense version of his 2016 campaign strategy.

"I do think this is him running in 2016, but on acid, as I've said before," she said. "He's taking his old ways of ginning up people's racism and xenophobia."

McCain added, however, she thinks everyday Republicans disapprove of the comments.

"There are a lot of people I know, a lot of hardworking conservatives I know that are very, very upset," she said.

But Behar interrupted her, saying more conservatives should voice their disagreement.

"I'm so sorry to hear that," Behar said. "Why don't they open their mouths?"

McCain fired back, arguing that many do not have platforms large enough to make their voices hear.

"You know why, Joy?" she said over the studio audience's applause. "Because some of them are private citizens and friends of mine that don't have the kind of platforms we do."

McCain added that, though many conservatives with platforms have condemned the comments, those close to the president should criticize them as well.

"I still say, where is Ivanka? Where is Mike Pence? Where is Jared Kushner, who is supposed to be the hope in all of this?" she asked.
