First Lady Melania Trump took to Instagram to share her response to the new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic but, well, you can formulate your own opinions after watching. I mean, I’m glad she’s finally taken the time to address this issue, while husband President Donald Trump has been repeatedly criticized for underplaying concerns surrounding the virus. But I couldn’t help but find Melania’s coronavirus PSA on Instagram robotic not to mention lacking some basic information. Here’s what the First Lady had to say.

“Today, I want to speak with you about coronavirus and what it means for you and your family,” Melania addressed the camera. “While changes need to be made now, this is not how we will live forever. Our children will return to school, people will return to work, we will gather at places of worship, concerts, and sporting events again. I urge you to stay connected to family and loved ones through video chats, phone calls, social media, and other safe technologies.”

“Please be sure to follow CDC guidelines which can be found at coronavirus.gov or cdc.gov along with other information and resources,” she continued. “Stay safe, and remember, while many of us are apart, we are all in this together.”

Like I said, I appreciate Melania addressing us at a time when many Americans are scared and don’t know where to turn — and I especially appreciate her message of unity at the end. But, beyond providing the URLs to government websites, Melania gave no real information on practices we should be following right now. And focusing on a distant vision of the future when things return to normal can be helpful in some instances — but when the current administration has only just started taking this global health crisis as seriously as it requires, that’s not the message we need.

Melania should be encouraging Americans to be vigilant in doing what we can to stop the spread of COVID-19. And honestly, while it’s a little late in the game for this, she may want to work on injecting a little more sincerity and warmth into her public speaking voice. What we need now is human connection, as Melania herself pointed out. But this video of our First Lady reading “it’ll all be over soon” off cue cards just didn’t do it for me.
