Melbourne Resident Surveys Damaged Suburb as Thousands Displaced by Flooding

Piles of garbage and flood-damaged furniture lined the streets of a Melbourne suburb on Sunday, October 16, as residents cleaned up after the Maribyrnong River burst its banks, causing the area’s worst flooding in almost 50 years.

Footage by Chris McGinn shows the scene in the flood-hit suburb of Maribyrnong. McGinn wrote on Twitter that the “amount of damage caused is hard to believe,”

According to the ABC, the state government estimated that 300,000 tons of waste would end up in landfills after the flooding.

More than 11,000 people have been displaced, the outlet said. Credit: Chris McGinn via Storyful
