Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, U.S. landmarks to light up for metastatic breast cancer

PORTSMOUTH — Memorial Bridge connecting Portsmouth and Kittery, along with the Community Church of Durham, are local sites taking part in #LightUpMBC in October. The bright lights are part of a global landmark campaign that aims to shine a light on the importance of awareness and funding for metastatic breast cancer research and benefits nonprofit Metavivor Research and Support Inc.

The campaign was founded by a local resident in memory of her best friend taken by the disease at 36 years old. Every year, more than 685,000 people worldwide die from metastatic breast cancer (MBC), also known as Stage 4 or advanced breast cancer, for which there is no cure. MBC is when the cancer spreads beyond the breast to other parts of the body.
