Memorial Day 2022 events recognizing fallen servicemembers in central Iowa

Memorial Day is Monday, May 30, and central Iowans have many opportunities to recognize the holiday this year.

First recognized on May 30, 1868, Memorial Day was originally named Decoration Day for the time people took to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers. Congress declared Memorial Day a national holiday in 1971 and it was moved to the last Monday in May each year.

Now, the holiday provides an opportunity to honor men and women who have died while serving in the armed forces by visiting cemeteries, participating in parades and attending memorial events.

The following are some Memorial Day events planned in central Iowa this year:

Adel

The official state observance will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery at 34024 Veterans Memorial Dr.. The event is set to begin May 30 at 8 a.m., with a live broadcast and recording of the event on Facebook for those who cannot attend.
