Memorial Day 2022: Your guide to Memorial Day events in Southeast Iowa this weekend

The Burlington Area Veterans Council will sponsor a Memorial Day ceremony Monday.

The service at 10:30 a.m. at Burlington Memorial Auditorium will honor the nation's fallen heroes and recognize veterans and active-duty military.

According to Des Moines County Area Veterans Council member Curt Daughters, about 120 people usually attend the ceremony.

After opening comments, the ceremony will kick off with the National Anthem played by Burlington Municipal Band directed by Carmen Lachnitt. Before the anthem will be the Pledge of Allegiance.

Muni Band, unable to participate for the past two years due to COVID-19 precautions, also will play the Armed Forces Salute for each military branch.

"Burlington Area veterans council is happy to welcome the Municipal Band back," said Daughters.

"Having a part in remembering and honoring our country’s fallen heroes and its veterans is very important to us and we’re grateful to have a part in doing that," said Jim Priebe, foundation director for the Muni Band.

Army veteran Mike McCullough will give the invocation and benediction.

The guest speaker this year will be Lt. Col. Jason Crist, the new Iowa Army Ammunition Plant commander.

The Burlington Area Honor Guard will provide the rifle volley and the playing of "Taps" at the end of the ceremony.

The folding of the flag will be handled by Marine Corps. veterans Larry Shacklett and Daughters, narrated by Gene Anderson, an Army veteran.

A missing man table in honor of fallen, missing, or imprisoned military service members will be set up and read by Jeff Strause, a Marine veteran.

There will be a moment of silence for fallen comrades of the last year.

The placing of the poppies will be by Dorothy Leazer, American Legion Auxiliary.

Coffee will be served before the service, and after the service along with donuts.

Saturday

Lockridge Veterans Association. 8:30 a.m., Community Center, starting with coffee, tea, juice, and pastries, followed by the main program at 9 a.m. with an update to the memorial, opening reading, POW/MIA recognition, speech, and video clip, posting of flags, Honor Guard and dismissal.

New London VFW Post 7641, 802 E. McKinley St., catfish and chicken dinner is 5-7 p.m. Catfish is $12 per person; chicken is $8/person, and all-white chicken is $9/person.

Monday

Bonaparte Memorial Day Service, 10 a.m., Bonaparte Cemetery.

Divine Mercy Parish Knights of Columbus Memorial Day Mass, 9 a.m., Sacred Heart Cemetery, Crapo Park. The site is St. John's Catholic Church.

Keosauqua Memorial Day Service, 9 a.m., Riverfront Park Amphitheater.

Montrose St. Barnabas Chapel, 300 Chestnut St., St. Barnabas Community Choir free concerts, 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. Montrose Township Historical Society will accept donations.

Moose Lodge 579, 2529 Mount Pleasant St., Memorial Day Picnic, 11:45 a.m., serving chicken, fish, potato salad, baked beans, and spring Salad. Cakewalk is 1 p.m., and bingo starts at 2 p.m.

Mount Pleasant Memorial Day Observance, 10:30 a.m., Mount Pleasant Middle School gym. Note the new location.

Nauvoo, Illinois, Memorial Day freewill donation picnic, 11 a.m., Nauvoo City Park, with music performances and a patriotic flag ceremony, sponsored by Nauvoo Betterment Association.

New London Memorial Day Observance will be at 2 p.m. at the Veteran's Memorial. Bring lawn chairs. The rain site will be VFW Post 7641, 802 East McKinley St.

Old Fort Madison Battlefield Memorial Service, 9 a.m.,1812 Battlefield, Fourth Street and Avenue G, Fort Madison. Then, follow re-enactors and Eugene Watkins, Old Fort Madison site manager, to the fort where a military history exhibit is set up, starting at 10 a.m. Re-enactments are 11 a.m.; 1:30 p.m.; 3:30 p.m., closing is 5 p.m.

Salem Memorial Day Service, 10 a.m., Veterans Memorial on Main Street. Pat Coen will guest speak. The event will conclude with a three-volley salute.

Closings

Most businesses and institutions will be closed Monday to observe the national holiday, originally named Decoration Day for the time people took to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers.

  • Burlington City Hall will be closed on Monday. The City Council Work Session is moved to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Thomas J. Smith Council Chambers, City Hall.

  • In Burlington, Monday's trash will be picked up on Tuesday along with Tuesday's trash. The rest of the week's trash route will remain the same. Trash should be set out before 7 a.m. as usual.

  • Fort Madison City offices will be closed Monday and will reopen Tuesday. Monday’s garbage route will be collected on Tuesday All other garbage, recycling. and yard waste routes will be unaffected.

  • Lee County Offices will be closed Monday. Normal business hours will resume Tuesday.

  • Mount Pleasant City offices are closed in observance of Memorial Day. Garbage collection will be one day later this week.
