Memorial Day 2023: Where to honor veterans in Volusia, Flagler counties

Amid all the beach getaways, barbecues and parties, Memorial Day weekend is also a time to honor the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans for the cause of freedom.

Here’s a look at Memorial Day ceremonies scheduled in Volusia and Flagler counties.

Daytona Beach

A Memorial Day Ceremony to honor and remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice will be hosted by VFW Post 1590 at noon Monday at 1013 Veterans Court, Daytona Beach.

DeBary

VFW Post 8093 will host an event to honor and remember those who gave their lives for freedom at noon Monday at 351 Charles Richard Beall Blvd., DeBary.

DeLand

American Legion Post 6 will present a Memorial Day Ceremony from 9-11 a.m. Monday at Bill Dreggors Park, 230 N. Stone St. DeLand Mayor Chris Cloudman will offer words of gratitude to veterans in a ceremony that also will include a presentation by the DeLand Fire Department’s Honor Guard and reflection at the park’s Wall of Honor listing local heroes who have given their lives for freedom.

After the ceremony, there will be an opportunity to visit patriotic military collections at the DeLand Memorial Hospital and Veterans Museum. For details, call 386-943-9537.

Deltona

American Legion Post 255 in Deltona will team with Veterans Community Educational Partnership to present a traditional Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at Deltona Memorial Gardens, 1295 Saxon Blvd., Orange City. Program will include presentation of colors, laying of wreaths and remarks by Maj. Marion Cotten (U.S. Marine Corps retired), VCEP director.

Holly Hill

The City of Holly Hill and American Legion Post 120 will present a traditional Memorial Day ceremony from 9-9:45 a.m. Monday in front of Holly Hill City Hall and the Merci Train, 1065 Ridgewood Ave., Holly Hill.

New Smyrna Beach

The City of New Smyrna Beach and VFW Post 4250 will present a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice. The ceremony will be held along the waterfront outside the Brannon Center, 105 S. Riverside Drive.

The American Spirit Brass Band will begin performing at 10:40 a.m. before the ceremony begins with a bagpipes tribute at 11 a.m. The program will consist of presentation of colors, the National Anthem, a four-plane fly-by conducted by Yankee Flight and guest speakers that include state Sen. Tom Wright and Rep. Cory Mills.

Ormond Beach

There will be a Memorial Day Remembrance Event at 9 a.m. Monday at Rockefeller Gardens, on the east banks of the Halifax River, south of Granada Boulevard.

The event is presented by the City of Ormond Beach Leisure Services Department’s Memorial Remembrance Committee, American Legion Post 267 and American Legion Unit 267.

Ponce Inlet

The sacrifices made by U.S. military veterans to preserve our freedom will be honored at a Memorial Day Ceremony at 9 a.m. Monday at the Ponce Inlet Veterans Memorial at Davies Lighthouse Park, 4931 S. Peninsula Drive, Ponce Inlet.

Port Orange

The City of Port Orange will hold its annual Memorial Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at Veterans Park in City Center, 4655 City Center Circle, Port Orange. VFW Post 3282 will host the ceremony, which will feature a display of colors, speeches and a 21-gun salute.

Flagler County

The City of Palm Coast will host a Memorial Day Ceremony to remember the men and women who gave their lives in service to the U.S. military. It will begin at 8 a.m. Monday at Heroes Memorial Park, 2860 Palm Coast Pkwy. NW, Palm Coast (1/2 mile west of the Flagler County Library). Parking is available along Corporate Drive and at the Library.
