Memorial Day events for Alliance area

FLAG PLACEMENT – The City of Alliance Memorial Day Committee will place flags on veterans’ graves on Thursday at Alliance City Cemetery, 541 W. Vine St. Rain date is Friday. Flags will be delivered to the cemetery at 5 p.m. Thursday. Half will be distributed from the Vine Street entrance, with the remainder in the back of the cemetery near the maintenance garage. Instruction sheets for proper placement and section maps will be distributed along with the flags. Screwdrivers are handy for placement if the ground is dry. Veterans’ families and members of the community are invited to help with flag placement as well as removal from the graves. The community and veterans’ families also are welcome to help Vietnam veterans place flags at Fairmount Cemetery, 4199 S. Union Ave. in Alliance at 9 a.m. Sunday.

HARTVILLE VILLAGE – The Village of Hartville will present a Memorial Day ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Park. A mounted unit from the Stark County Sheriff's Office will lead a procession from Village Hall to Memorial Park. Featured speaker will be Stark County Common Pleas Judge Taryn Heath, who will speak about the Veterans' Honor Court. Music will be provided by Olivia Gant; bagpiper Alan Stiver; and Lake High School trumpeter Cameron Gregory.

NORTH GEORGETOWN − The George D. Worth Post 574 of the American Legion plans a Memorial Day program at 10 a.m. Monday at Highland Memorial Park. Parade will begin at 9:45 a.m. and travel through the park, led by Post 574 Color Guard, West Branch High School's band and a Scout group. Program speaker this year is Roger Sharp, veteran and teacher at West Branch High School.

EAST CANTON – Lowell D. Oberly American Legion Post 667 of East Canton plans its Memorial Day parade at 10 a.m. Monday. Participants should be at Browning and Noble no later than 9:30 a.m. for lineup and placement. Route will go west on Center Street; south on State Route 44; west on Church; north on Plum; and east on Noble. Contact Jack Spencer at 330-581-5199 with questions.

WEST TOWNSHIP – West Township Memorial Association plans a march and program on Monday at Moultrie Chapel, State Route 172 in Moultrie. The march to decorate the graves will begin at 2 p.m., led by Don V. Cross American Legion Post 357 from Minerva. Amelia Whiteleather, fifth-grader at Minerva Elementary School, will recite the Gettysburg Address. Patriotic music and taps will be provided by Minerva Community Band. The program in the chapel will include speaker Lt. Col. Vito J. Abruzzino from Lisbon. Attending veterans will be recognized. Kendra Bertsch will provide special music, and Joseph Ellis will lead the congregation in song. Ice cream will be served afterward. The chapel is two miles east of New Franklin, north of Minerva, east of State routes 183 and 172. For GPS, use 23577 State Route 172 in Minerva.

CANFIELD EVENTS – The 102nd annual Canfield Memorial Day Service is planned for 10 a.m. Monday at Veterans Plaza on the Canfield North Green. Featured speaker will be Leo Connelly, commissioner of Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission. Following the ceremony, a procession will head to Canfield East Cemetery, where a second, brief ceremony will honor deceased Canfield veterans. Participants then will return to the Canfield War Vets Museum, where a final ceremony is planned to honor individuals whose names have been added to the Wall of Honor – U.S. Marine William Kocanjer; Verl D. Rhoton of the U.S. Navy; and George R. Sarver of the U.S. Army. Those attending the ceremonies are encouraged to bring a single, non-perishable food item which will be donated to area veterans in need by the Zion Lutheran Church Veterans Food Bank. Dropoff points will be at Veterans Plaza and the War Vets Museum. Also, non-serviceable American flags can be dropped off at the collection box on the porch of the War Vets Museum. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony on the Green will move to Canfield High School’s auditorium.
