Here are some Memorial Day events around the state you can attend this holiday weekend

Poseidon Festival, Bethany Beach

The Poseidon Festival in Bethany Beach is a four-day celebration packed with various activities for families.

Beginning on Friday at 7:30 p.m., the festival includes events such as a Parrot Beach show, a pirate and mermaid costume contest followed by tea and cookies and a scavenger hunt, pirate demonstrations and a luau show throughout the weekend.

A marine science camp will also be hosted as well as more concerts and live sand sculpting before the festival closes with a bandstand Memorial Day Service at 11 a.m. on Monday.

Middletown Memorial Day parade

On Memorial Day, Middletown’s Stone Square Lodge #22, a historically Black Masonic lodge, is hosting a parade in honor of the holiday.

The parade will begin at Louis L. Redding Middle School at 10:30 a.m. before traveling through New Street, Main Street, Broad Street and Lake Street before returning to the school at its conclusion.

Harrington Memorial Parade

The Greater Harrington Historical Society will have a parade through the city on Memorial Day.

The parade kicks off at 9 a.m. followed by a ceremony at the Norman Barlow Pavilion. Attendees can continue to honor fallen soldiers by attending the American Legion events at Hollywood Cemetery.

Aside from the parade, the Greater Harrington Historical Society museum will be open for tours until 2 p.m. if you are interested in learning about the town and seeing local artifacts.

Bowers Beach Buccaneer Bash

In its 10th year of celebration, the Bowers Beach Buccaneer Bash is a free event taking place on Saturday and Sunday that is filled with fun events from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Live music and entertainment will be provided, treasure hunts and costume contests will be held and plenty of food, craft, and novelty vendors will be present. 

To celebrate pirates of the Delaware Bay, there will be sword fights, nautical demonstrations, a staged bar fight and demonstrations in black powder. The two-day event will also celebrate the community’s oyster-harvesting heritage.

Wilmington Memorial Day parade

The Wilmington Memorial Day Committee is hosting a modified Memorial Day parade this year that will be the area’s 155th consecutive observance of the holiday since 1868.

The parade will begin on Delaware Avenue and Woodlawn Avenue before proceeding to the Soldiers and Sailors monument on Broom Street in downtown Wilmington at 6 p.m. Monday.

Committee members will lay a wreath at the monument and say a few words to honor all service members who have fought for the country.
