Memorial Day on the Gulf Coast: A roundup of weekend events to honor fallen military

Several events are planned across Escambia and Santa Rosa counties this weekend to honor fallen military. Here are a few of the most prominent.

SUNDAY

Memorial Day Ceremony

1 p.m. Sunday, May 28. Veterans Memorial Park, 200 S. 10th Ave. The Veterans Memorial Park Foundation of Pensacola invites active-duty military personnel, veterans, families and all community members to attend the Memorial Day Ceremony at the park. A Marine Corps Color Guard will present the colors and the Pensacola Opera Chorus will perform a patriotic medley of songs. In addition, the Blue Anchor Belles will sing an assortment of '40s and '50s patriotic-style music, and the McGuire’s Pipe Band will also be featured at the ceremony. A Marine Corps bugler and honor guard will close the ceremony by rendering honors. More info: veteransmemorialparkpensacola.org.

MONDAY

Milton Memorial Day Ceremony

10 a.m. Monday, May 29. Veterans Memorial Plaza, 5191 Willing St., Milton. The Veterans Memorial Plaza's annual Memorial Day ceremony will take place in remembrance of the brave men and women who gave their lives while serving our country. The ceremony will feature the Milton High School Navy Junior ROTC, pastors Brian Dieda and Jim Liberacki, Milton High School Chorus, Captain Paul N. Flores, Commanding Officer NAS Whiting Field, wreath presentation by veterans organizations, and the Milton High School Band. More info: santarosa.fl.gov.

Navarre Memorial Day Ceremony

11 a.m. Monday, May 29. Navarre Park. 8513 Navarre Parkway. The Navarre High School Honor Guard and Navy Junior ROTC will provide the color guard, national anthem singers and buglers for Taps. Col. Kenneth Rodriguez (Ret.) will be the guest speaker and various local organizations will lay wreaths in memoriam. More info: santarosa.fl.gov.

Memorial Day Backyard BBQ

1 p.m. Monday, May 29. Coastal County Brewing Company, 3041 E. Olive Road. Coastal County’s craft kitchen staff will be manning the grills to provide attendees with their favorite backyard barbecue fare. They’ll also be joined by Coastal Chill Co. bringing Italian ice treats and gourmet ice cream flavors. Joey Collins will take the Beer Garden Stage at 2 p.m. with live entertainment. There will be competitions to keep things light and playful starting at 4 p.m. More info: coastalcountybrewing.com.

Pensacola Memorial Day Concert

3:30 p.m. Monday, May 29. Hunter Amphitheater at Community Maritime Park, 351 W. Cedar St. The Pensacola Civic Band continues the tradition of honoring our men and women in uniform, veterans, their families, and all those who have given their lives for America with the eighth annual Pensacola Memorial Day Concert. This event honoring the bravery and sacrifice of the country’s veterans and members of the U.S. Armed Services is a season highlight for the members of the band and the Pensacola community. Free.
