Memorial Day: Muncie and surrounding areas plan services, speakers, parade to honor the fallen

MUNCIE, Ind. — Cemeteries and local organizations will mark Memorial Day this weekend with ceremonies and other events.

Sunday, May 29

A Memorial Day service with local organizations and residents participating will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Bethel Cemetery, on Bethel Avenue just west of Delaware County Road 750-W and across from Bethel Church, 12110 W. Bethel Ave. All are welcome to attend. In case of bad weather, the service will be moved inside Bethel Church.

The Union Cemetery Association's Memorial Day service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at 16301 N. Ind. 3, Eaton. The program will be outdoors behind the chapel, weather permitting, or in the chapel if it's raining. Local Vietnam War veteran O. Howard Smith will be presented with a patriotic quilt honoring him for his service. The speaker will be Pastor Dan Vore, and military honors will be handled by the Delaware County Honor Guard. Light refreshments will be served after the service.

Monday, May 30

The Memorial Day service at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial for Delaware County at Heekin Park, Muncie, will be at 9 a.m. Monday. The program will include the roll of honor, comments by Chaplin David Mills of Kindred Hospice and a rifle salute and Taps by the Delaware County Honor Guard.

Redkey's annual Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday will be at 9 a.m. at Claycomb Cemetery, 10 a.m. at the Redkey War Mothers Memorial Monument and 11:15 a.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery. The programs will feature clergyman Randy Davis, with James Fulks officiating. The Veterans of Randolph County Honor Guard Unit will provide a firing unit and bugler for the Hillcrest Cemetery ceremony.

The New Castle-Henry County Chamber of Commerce's Memorial Day Ceremony will be at 9 a.m. at the Henry County Courthouse. Speakers will be veteran Nate LaMar, state Sen. Jeff Raatz and Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita. Veterans, active-duty, reserve and National Guard personnel attending are asked to arrive between 8:30 and 8:50 a.m. on the east side of the courthouse. Veteran parking is available on Race Street along the south side of the courthouse. Upon arrival, veterans should see the volunteers at the hospitality table.

New Castle's Memorial Day Parade in downtown New Castle will begin at 10 a.m. Monday. This year’s theme is “Remembering 200 Years of Henry County service men and women," A cash prize will be awarded for Chamber’s Choice among parade participants. Award certificates will be given for most patriotic, most unique, crowd pleaser, youth organization and vintage automobile. Beech Grove Cemetery's 150th annual Memorial Day ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the American Legion Section. The program will include a speech by Tommy Goul, Delaware County Veteran Services officer, the 2022 veterans list, music by America's Hometown Band and a rifle salute and Taps by the Delaware County Honor Guard. Seating will be limited, so guests are invited to take along their own blankets and chairs. Families are welcome to continue the tradition of placing flowers and small American flags at their loved one’s gravesite, according to a release.

The Dunkirk Memorial Day ceremony will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Dunkirk I.O.O.F. Cemetery. The program will include Gloria Hamilton as clergy, Dunkirk American Legion Post Commander Tim McCaffery officiating and military honors, a rifle firing line and bugler provided by the Dunkirk American Legion Honor Guard

The Matthews Cemetery Association's annual Memorial Day service to honor fallen military veterans will be at 2 p.m. Monday. The service will include an Honor Guard from Greentown and musical selections performed by Sweet Sounds. The keynote speaker will be Jerry Stevens, the American Legion's current 5th District judge advocate. Limited seating will be provided, so those attending are encouraged to take along their own lawn chairs.
