Memorial Day observances in the Hornell, Wellsville area. Here's how to pay tribute

Several local communities, including Hornell and Wellsville, will mark Memorial Day on Monday with parades and solemn remembrances.

Originally called Decoration Day, the holiday honors all soldiers who died during service to the nation. 

Memorial Day was declared a national holiday through an act of Congress in 1971, and its roots date back to the Civil War era, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs.

Unlike Veterans Day, Memorial Day honors all military members who have died in while serving in U.S. forces.

Here's how Hornell, Wellsville and several other localities will mark Memorial Day:

Hornell

The Hornell American Legion Post 440 sponsors Memorial Day events in the Maple City.

The parade will start at 9:30 a.m., stepping off from the Bishop-Johnson Funeral Home and proceeding down Main Street to the Burger King parking lot.

Immediately following the parade, a Memorial Day ceremony will be held at the Broadway Mall veterans memorial.

Following the ceremony, the Legion is inviting all community members to stop by the post home at 72 Seneca St. for light refreshments.

Wellsville

American Legion Post 702 will mark a day of remembrance on Monday starting with services at 9:30 a.m. in Veterans Park.

The parade lineup will begin at 9:45 a.m. on Pearl Street by the U.S. Post Office building.

The parade will begin at 10 a.m.

Services are also planned at Woodlawn and Sacred Heart cemeteries.

Andover

The American Legion will conduct a brief observance at the North Main Street bridge at 10 a.m., followed by services at Hillside Cemetery.

Arkport

American Legion Post 1248 sponsors Memorial Day observances in the village on Monday.

A parade lineup will be held 10:30 a.m. at Arkport Central School and the procession begins at 11 a.m.

Following the parade, there will be a ceremony at Arkport Cemetery.

An American Legion chicken barbecue, pre-sale tickets only, is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. at the post home, 1 Carter St.

Canisteo

A Memorial Day ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday in front of the American Legion, 61 W. Main St. The public is encouraged to attend.

Scio

Scio's annual Memorial Day parade will begin at 10 a.m. The town's Veteran of the Year and Citizens of the Year will be announced during the event.

Wayland

Wayland Legion Post 402 Honor Guard will hold ceremonies Monday at the following locations and times:

  • East Wayland Cemetery, 7:30 a.m.

  • North Loon Lake Cemetery, 7:45 a.m.

  • Lakeside Cemetery, 8 a.m.

  • Old Catholic Cemetery, 8:45 a.m.

  • New Catholic Cemetery, 8:55 a.m.

  • St. Peter’s Cemetery, 9:50 a.m.

  • Perkinsville Parade, 10 a.m.

  • Sacred Heart Cemetery, after the parade.

  • Wayland Memorial Day parade, 11 a.m.

  • Wayland Cemetery, after the parade.

All veterans are invited to attend the cemetery services and march with the Legion in both parades.

The Legion also welcomes any group or float to participate in the Wayland Parade. Please display a patriotic theme.

After the ceremonies, stop by the chicken barbecue at the Wayland Legion Post, 102 N. Main St. Chicken barbecues are priced at $12. The “Patrice and Friends” band will perform.
