Memorial Day parades, ceremonies planned for Monday

Area residents are welcome to celebrate Memorial Day and remember the servicemen and servicewomen who gave their all for Americans' freedom on Monday, May 29, by attending local events.

The Memorial Day Courthouse ceremony in Fremont will take place at 9 a.m. Monday, according to a news release from the Sandusky County Veterans Services Office.

The parade will take place at 10 a.m.

Lineup for the parade will start at 9 a.m. at the corner of North Arch and North Front street.  The parade route will be south on Front Street to Tiffin Street, ending at the entrance of Rodger Young Park.

There will be representatives from Fremont VFW Post 2947 and American Legion Post 608 to assist with lineup.  Organizers ask that everyone be respectful and remember that Memorial Day is a day to recognize our fallen servicemen and servicewomen.

Port Clinton hosts Walleye Festival

The 42nd Annual Walleye Festival is hosted by Main Street Port Clinton and runs through Monday.

The David W. Leonard No. 2295 Fraternal Order of Eagles Grande Parade will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The always-popular Skipper Bud’s Kids Fishing Derby will be held at Derby Pond in front of the Port Clinton Lighthouse on Sunday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Registration forms should be brought to registration check-in, which begins at 11:30 a.m. The first 100 kids to register will receive a free fishing pole and tackle box. Registration forms can be found at portclintonchamber.com/walleye-festival.

Clyde Memorial Day Parade on Monday

The Clyde American Legion is planning this year's parade and ceremony for Memorial Day.

The parade will line up in the 200 block of South Main Street and head north at 10 a.m. Besides veterans and other entries, the Clyde Fire Department will be walking in the parade.

The procession will turn west on Buckeye Street, north on George Street and west again on Maple Street. From there the parade will travel to Spring Street for a short ceremony at the St. Mary's Church Cemetery. The procession will return to Maple Street and go east traveling by both the Veteran's Memorial and the Firefighters Memorial. After brief ceremonies there, the parade will then go north to McPherson Cemetery for the Memorial Day Ceremony.

Genoa plans its ceremony

The Genoa Memorial Day ceremony will be 9 a.m. Monday at the Clay Township Cemetery.

Guest Speaker will be Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 35, President Robert E. Stewart. The event is sponsored by the Genoa American Legion and Auxiliary. There will be performances by Genoa American Legion Band, Genoa High School Band and Gabby Dunn.

There will be a cannon salute by the Cannoneers of Gibsonburg, and a dove release. The public is reminded to bring a lawn chair as seating is limited.

Oak Harbor follows traditional plan

On Monday, the Oak Harbor Memorial Day will begin with breakfast being served at the American Legion Post Home from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m., according to a news release from the Chamber of Commerce.

All veterans and family members are invited.

The VFW Post 8732 will hold Memorial Day services at the following cemeteries: 8:45 a.m. Frenchtown, 9:05 Locust Point, 9:30 a.m. Rushau and 9:55 a.m. Roose Cemetery.

The American Legion Post will hold memorial services at 9 a.m. at Limestone Cemetery and 9:30 a.m. at Elliston.

At 10:30 a.m., the two units will join with other organizations for the annual Memorial Day Parade led by the Benton-Carroll-Salem High School Band in front of the American Legion Home on Park Street.

At 11 a.m. the parade will travel south on Church Street to Water Street to Flat Iron Park for a brief ceremony. It will then proceed to the Bayou Bridge to honor veterans lost at sea. The parade will then proceed to the Veterans Memorial Circle in Union Cemetery for the final service of the day.

In case of rain, a ceremony will be held in the Oak Harbor Junior High School.

Woodville ceremony set

Woodville’s Memorial Day parade will step off at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, beginning at Elm Street and proceeding east on Main Street. There will be a brief stop at the bridge to drop a memorial wreath into the Portage River. The parade will then continue onto Bridge Street and then west on First Street to end at Veterans Park where there will be a brief service to honor fallen soldiers. This year’s guest speaker is Chet Conley.Following the service, everyone is invited for a free community breakfast in the gym at Solomon School, 305 West Main St. Donations will be accepted.

Elmore parade starts at high school

There will also be a Memorial Day Parade in Elmore at 10:30 a.m. Monday. It will begin at Woodmore High School and proceed down Toledo Street. There will be a stop at the Harris-Elmore Public Library where attendees can listen to a speech given by the American Legion. Children are invited to decorate their bicycles with patriotic colors and join the parade.

After the parade, there will be a chicken barbecue at the Legion Hall starting at 11:30 a.m. until it is sold out. Dinners are $12 each, drive-thru only.
