Memorial Day shopping 2020: Costco is closed Monday, but here's a list of what stores are open

Memorial Day, which commemorates military personnel who died in service, is considered the unofficial start to summer, a popular day for a cookout and in past years was also a big sales day.

This year is different with many stores in malls and shopping centers across the nation still shuttered after closing in mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Because of COVID-19, what stores are open can depend on state and local orders, and retailers' phased reopening plans. Fewer restaurants also are open than past years for the holiday.

Pier 1 Imports kicked off its going-out-of-business liquidation sale Friday ahead of the holiday weekend at stores that reopened from COVID-19 and on its website. Discounts are up to 30% off and all sales are final. All stores will permanently close in bankruptcy.

Retailers will have sales online and some stores will be open for curbside pickup Monday, even if the location hasn't fully reopened.

Take note that at some reopened stores, including Best Buy and the Container Store, an appointment is required to shop, which needs to be scheduled in advance.

There's one supersized exception to stores that are open Monday. All Costco Wholesale clubs are closed Monday like they are for New Year's Day, Easter, Independence Day, Labor Day and Christmas.
