Memorial Day: Ways to honor fallen soldiers in Stockton, Lodi, Manteca and Tracy

While many choose to light up the barbecue or turn on the Giants game on Memorial Day, others use the holiday to honor those who have fallen in the line of duty.

Unlike Veterans Day — which honors all military veterans living and dead — Memorial Day honors the men and women who died while serving in U.S. forces.

Memorial Day was declared a national holiday through an act of Congress in 1971, and its roots date back to the Civil War era, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans' Affairs.

This year, Memorial Day is on Monday, May 29.

There are several events happening in San Joaquin County to mark the holiday. Here's how you can pay your respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
