Memorial Day ceremonies around the Seacoast

Memorial Day will be observed Monday, May 30. The following is a list of events happening in the Seacoast area:

Dover

On Monday, May 30 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Woodman Museum will present a Memorial Day Tribute to the brave individuals who lost their lives defending our country in every war from the Revolution to today. The ceremony will be held at the Civil War Monument in the Pine Hill Cemetery, 131 Central Ave., Dover. At 11 a.m. there will be opening remarks by Jonathan Nichols, executive director of the Woodman Museum, an address by Dover Mayor Robert Carrier, a keynote speecy by LCDR. Heidi Roberts-Morrison, Navy (ret.), a wreath laying, TAPS and a cannon salute by the 1st NH Light Artillery. At 12 p.m. there will be a cannon demonstration by the 1st NH Light Artillery at Lower Fields. There is no cost to attend.

Durham

There will be a Memorial Day Ceremony held on Monday, May 30 at 10 a.m. downtown on Main Street at Memorial Park.

Eliot

The Eliot Legion will present a Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 30, starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Eliot Elementary School. The parade will end at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery with Memorial Day services beginning at 10 a.m. Following will be services held across the street at Brooks Memorial Cemetery.

Exeter

The Memorial Day Parade will start at 10 a.m. Monday, May 30, at Swasey Parkway and continue to Front Street with a ceremony at Gale Park. There will be a short ceremony at Gale Park before the parade continues to Exeter Cemetery where there will be another ceremony.

Hampton

Hampton's American Legion Post 35 will present its annual Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 30. This year, guest speaker will be Air Force Chief Master Sergeant Alex Reno, who serves as the Group Senior Enlisted Leader for the 439th Maintenance Group, Westover ARB, Massachusetts, and is Hampton's Deputy Police Chief. Ceremonies will take place at 8 a.m. at Hampton Beach at the Marine Memorial; 9 a.m. in Hampton Falls at Weare Common; 10 a.m. will be the North Hampton Parade followed by a ceremony in front of the Town Clerk's office. Units form up at 9:45 a.m. in the Citizens Bank parking lot on Route 1. At 11:30 a.m., the Hampton Parade will take place followed by a ceremony at the High Street Cemetery. Units form up at 11:15 a.m. next to Hampton Fire Department on Winnacunnet Road.

Fireworks canceled: Hampton Beach Memorial Day fireworks shows called off. The reason? Piping plovers are nesting.

UPDATE: Fireworks scheduled for Memorial Day weekend and for June 18 are canceled because two piping plover nests were found on the beach, according to Chuck Rage, chairman of the Hampton Beach Village District.

Hampton Falls

Hampton American Legion Post 35 will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 9 a.m. in Hampton Falls at Weare Common.

Kittery, Maine

The Kittery-Eliot VFW Post 9394 will host a ceremony in observance of Memorial Day at the Orchard Grove Cemetery, beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 28. The ceremony will feature local speakers to honor those who have served and sacrificed in the pursuit of freedom.

North Hampton

The North Hampton Parade will be at 10 a.m. followed by a ceremony in front of the Town Clerk's office. Units for the parade form up at 9:45 a.m. in the Citizens Bank parking lot on Route 1.

Portsmouth

On Friday, May 27 at 10:30 a.m., the Burial at Sea service takes place in Prescott Park.

A Memorial Day Parade will take place on Monday, May 30 from 1 to 2 p.m. The parade steps off at corner of Junkins Avenue and Parrott Avenue. There'll be a cookout picnic in Prescott Park following the parade.

The Portsmouth Knights of Columbus will be honoring Memorial Day with an honor guard and the playing of Taps and the National Anthem at the Portsmouth Plains cemetery (behind ball field) at 11 a.m., on Monday, May 30. All are welcome to attend and pay tribute to the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces.

Rochester

The City of Rochester and Vouchers for Veterans present the Field of Honor during Memorial Day Weekend at the Rochester Common. Full-size American flags will be displayed around and within the oval park. The Field of Honor is free to the public and will open on Saturday, May 28, at 9 a.m. The display will remain in place until Tuesday morning, May 31. Each night at 7 p.m. a bugler will play taps to commemorate members of all branches of the armed forces. This year 550 flags will be erected with 100 of those dedicated specifically to N.H. and Maine veterans who died in service.

A Memorial Day Ceremony will take place on Monday, May 30, beginning at 11 a.m. The American Legion Post 7 will open the ceremony with the presentation of colors followed by the laying of the wreaths for each branch of the military. Mayor Paul Callaghan will welcome all in attendance and provide opening remarks. General Donald Bolduc will speak next, followed by other guest speakers. Those who wish to can bring a chair.

Somersworth

Memorial Services will be held on Monday, May 30 at each cemetery beginning at 9:10 a.m., Forest Glade Cemetery; 9:30 a.m. Greek Orthodox Cemetery; 9:45a.m. Mt. Calvary Cemetery; 10:15a.m. Holy Trinity Cemetery; 10:40 a.m.Tri City Christian Cemetery. Participants should be at the High School Memorial at 8:40 a.m.

A Memorial Day parade will form at the American Legion parking lot at 11 a.m. Step off will be at 11:30 a.m. sharp. Participating will be the Somersworth High School Marching Band. Brief ceremonies will be held at Veterans Memorial Park and at the Somersworth – Berwick Bridge. Veterans needing a ride in the parade or for more information, call Post 69 at (603) 692-9898.

York

The Town of York will hold its Memorial Day Parade on Monday at 10 a.m.

The parade will begin from the staging area at St. Christopher's Church on Route 1A and then proceed southbound to the First Parish Cemetery, where a brief ceremony will take place in the green behind Town Hall.

Major General Tom Spencer, of the United States Army, will give the Memorial Day address.

The York High School Band, the York Middle School Band, and the Piscataqua Junior Rangers Fife & Drum Corps all will perform at the ceremony.

All local veterans are invited to march at the front of the parade and are asked to report to St. Christopher’s Church no later than 9:45 a.m.
