Memorial Day weekend events honoring fallen veterans set for Appleton, Neenah, Menasha

Local veterans organizations are marking Memorial Day weekend with special events. Here's what you need to know.

Appleton hosts parade, ceremony on Monday

The Appleton Memorial Day Parade and “Moment of Remembrance” Ceremony on Monday will honor the U.S. servicemembers who have lost their lives serving our country.

The parade will begin at 9 a.m. from the corner of College Avenue and Appleton Street. The procession will head east on College Avenue to Meade Street, north on Meade Street to Pacific Street, and east on Pacific Street ending at the corner of Pacific and Owaissa streets.

Last year, Fast Signs created large banners to display the names of Outagamie County servicemen and women who died while serving in the United States military, from the Civil War to the present. Great Northern Corp. will drive the banners in the parade on a semi-truck, which will park outside the entrance of Riverside Cemetery for attendees to view.

The “Moment of Remembrance” ceremony will take place after the parade in Riverside Cemetery, at the George D. Eggleston, G.A.R. monument, 714 North Owaissa St. A short, second ceremony will be held at the Appleton American Legion Post No. 38 plot. This plot is at the entrance of the St. Joseph Cemetery within Riverside Cemetery.

Veteran cemetery tour set for Sunday in Appleton

The Scarlet Guard American Legion Color Guard, along with other local veteran service organizations and military personnel, will gather Sunday to perform a salute for veterans laid to rest at each cemetery in the city of Appleton.

The schedule is as follows:

  • Noon, Riverside Cemetery, 714 N. Owaissa St.

  • 12:15 p.m., American Legion Plot, at the entrance of St. Joseph Cemetery bordering Riverside Cemetery

  • 12:45 p.m., Moses Montefiore Cemetery, East Woodland Avenue.

  • 1:15 p.m., Highland Memorial Park, 3131 N. Richmond St.

  • 2 p.m., St. Mary Cemetery, 2121 W. Prospect Ave.

Veterans Council to host remembrance event Saturday

The Fox Valley Veterans Council will host a Memorial Day event in honor of those who died while in service to our country. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Outagamie County Courthouse steps, 410 S. Walnut St.

The event will be a processional homage to those on the War Memorial inside the building. There will be a Gold Star Banner as the tribute point honoring the fallen. Anne Norman will be the bagpiper with American Legion Post 41 as the rifle team. Patriot Guard will line the cement area with Flags of Honor.

Gold Star families are welcome to join the processional. The event is open to the public and will be held rain or shine.

Veterans groups join to host parade, ceremonies

Twin Cities Veterans organizations, which includes Neenah American Legion Post 33, Menasha American Legion Post 152, Menasha VFW Post 2126 and the cities of Neenah and Menasha and the village of Fox Crossing, will put on the annual Memorial Day celebration Monday.

The event starts at 8 a.m. at the waterfront on Mill Street in Menasha. Veterans who were lost at sea will be remembers by placing a wreath and flowers in the water.

At 8:45 a.m., the Neenah-Menasha Rotary will hand out American flags to those along the parade route. The parade starts at 9 a.m. in Menasha at Second and Milwaukee Streets, proceeds down Milwaukee Street to Main Street and continues to Tayco Street, then into Neenah on Commercial Street to Main Street, ending at the Ascension Clinic at Main Street and Doty Avenue.

This marks the 127th annual parade in the Twin Cities and also will mark the 150th birthday of the city of Neenah.

After the parade, at about 10:45 a.m., the celebration moves to Oak Hill Cemetery in Neenah for the Military Honors for all veterans who have died. The event includes a guest speaker, student speakers from St. Mary’s Catholic High School, along with the Neenah High School Marching Band. During the program, there will be wreaths placed at the military monument in the cemetery and a rifle salute from the Neenah-Menasha Honor Guard. Echo Taps will be played by two members of the Neenah High School Band. Attendees should bring lawn chairs.

AFter the ceremony, American Legion Post 33 of Neenah will hold the annual brat fry and bake sale at Lucky Dog’z on Green Bay Road in Neenah.
