Memorial Day Weekend things to do: Brunching, wining, dining and a Prince prom in West Palm Beach …

A summertime three-day weekend (some call it five) in South Florida should offer a little more elbow room and can be an opportunity to try something different, go someplace you’ve never been, to linger over brunch or a cocktail, to catch your breath (not easy, thanks to the Heat and Panthers). Here are some ideas.

THURSDAY

New restaurant:This is opening weekend for American Social Bar & Kitchen in Boca Raton’s Mizner Park, adding an elevated sports-pub dining option for lunch, brunch and dinner, and a buzzy late-night watering hole to Plaza Real’s bustling nightlife. If you’ve been to the Fort Lauderdale AmSo on Las Olas and think you know what to expect, maybe not. The Boca location is showcasing a thoroughly revised new menu. Brunch is Saturday and Sunday. Listen to the music:With both of the band’s iconic vocalists, Tom Johnston and Michael McDonald, joining founding guitarist Patrick Simmons, The Doobie Brothers bring their 50th anniversary tour to Hard Rock Live at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Hollywood at 8 p.m. Thursday. Country rowdy:Tortuga Music Festival alum Jon Langston brings his Let’s Get Rowdy Tour to country bar Renegades in West Palm Beach on Thursday night. Wine from Spain:The gents at Sidewalk Bottle Shop in Fort Lauderdale’s up-and-coming Progresso neighborhood on Friday will host another of their popular meet-the-winemaker parties, this one dedicated to the small Spanish winery Bodegas Coruña Del Conde. Álvaro de la Viña of Brooklyn-based wine importer Selections de la Viña will be on hand, and there will be Spanish tapas to pair with the wine. New music:Singer-songwriter Sophie B. Weekend movie:The irreverent cineastes at Popcorn Frights will host a screening of “Natural Born Killers” — featuring Woody Harrelson (a career-changing role) and Juliette Lewis, directed by Oliver Stone from a story by Quentin Tarantino (with a Trent Reznor soundtrack) — at 10 p.m. Friday at the Classic Gateway Theatre in Fort Lauderdale. Home shopping: The annual Palm Beach Home Design and Remodeling Show rolls out at the Palm Beach County Convention Center through Monday, with more than 100,000 square feet of exhibitors. No joke: The Palm Beach Improv abruptly closed its longtime home at The Square in West Palm Beach last weekend, with social media posts citing “new development plans” at the downtown center. Dim sum brunch: Temple Street Eatery in downtown Fort Lauderdale will celebrate Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month with Dim Sum Brunch with Friends, partnering with other local Asian-themed hospitality spots such as Ichimora, Yip and Leaf House. Brunch by Grenier: The long weekend means you get to linger longer over Sunday brunch, splurge a little, maybe go bottomless. Worth noting: Buzzy chef Adrienne Grenier, a local with national bonafides after winning the Food Network competition “Chopped,” recently took over the kitchen at Burlock Coast at The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale. Grenier returns to South Florida after helping to open well-regarded Brooklyn cafe Pasta Louise. The Hollywood native made her name locally as executive chef of 3030 Ocean at the Fort Lauderdale Marriott Harbor Beach Resort & Spa, and prior to that worked at 1500 Degrees (named one of the Best New Restaurants in the country by Esquire) under her mentor, chef Paula DaSilva. Spirit of LeBron: Continuing the spirited vibe from its 2022 debut, Mezcal Lauderdale will return from June 2 to 5, this time celebrating tequila’s daring cousin at Canyon in downtown Fort Lauderdale, where a recent renovation included the intimate tequila bar called Rio’s. Among the dozens of brands to be poured will be several bottles with celebrity names attached, including LeBron James (Lobos 1707 Mezcal Artesanal), Maluma (Contraluz Cristalino Reposado Mezcal) and Lenny Kravitz (Nocheluna Sotol).
