Memorial to be dedicated to Cody Holte on Sunday northwest of Jamestown

Jun. 11—A memorial will be dedicated to Cody Holte, the Grand Forks police officer who died in the line of duty on May 27, 2020, on Sunday, June 13, northwest of Jamestown.

Holte was shot and killed while assisting deputies from the Grand Forks County Sheriff's Office who were serving an eviction notice at a Grand Forks apartment when they were fired upon. He had served with the Grand Forks Police Department for three years.

The organizer for Sunday's event, Ryan Lindberg, said he has been planning the event for more than a year. Holte was a member of the 817th Engineer Company of the North Dakota National Guard in Jamestown for about five years and at the time of his death at age 29 had been serving with the 815th Engineer Company of Edgeley. Lindberg was a friend of Holte's and served with him in the 817th.

Holte's family is expected to attend the dedication.

"It's not just for the family but for our unit since we have so many guys that were close to him," Lindberg said. The event will give the unit an opportunity to remember Holte, he said.

"There's a lot of guys in our unit that obviously knew him very well," Lindberg said.

Representatives of law enforcement agencies and military units from around the state are expected to gather between 1:30 and 2 p.m. in the Jamestown Civic Center parking lot and the public could stop by during that time, Lindberg said. Family, friends, law enforcement and military units will leave the parking lot at 2:15 p.m. The route will be west toward First Avenue, then north on First Avenue where the vehicles will turn onto U.S. Highway 52/281 (5th Street Northwest) and leave Jamestown. Lindberg is encouraging the public to support the procession by standing on the sidewalks with American flags in those areas as the procession leaves Jamestown for the memorial site.

Lindberg said parking is limited at the location, about 12 miles northwest of Buchanan, which is why the event is for family, friends, law enforcement and military. More information on the memorial will be released after the event.
