Memorial service for P-Funk co-founder Clarence 'Fuzzy' Haskins set for Plainfield

A memorial service will take place for P-Funk co-founder Clarence “Fuzzy” Haskins at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Shiloh Baptist Church in Plainfield.

Haskins, who was an original member of the Parliaments of Plainfield, passed away March 17 at the age of 81 in Detroit.

Haskins was part of the crew at the Silk Palace barber shop, owned by George Clinton, in Plainfield that transitioned from the doo-wop of the Parliaments to the space age mélange of funk, R&B, gospel, rock and more of Parliament Funkadelic.

Haskins was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997, and was later bestowed a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. Musicians and fans from around the world expressed their condolences when he passed.

“We appreciate the love that we have received already,” said Haskins daughter Crystal White of Hopelawn to the USA Today Network - New Jersey. “We appreciate the stories that are being told. We're very grateful for that.”

Started making music as a child

Haskins was born June 8, 1941, in Elkhorn, West Virginia, and brought a guitar as a child for $3 and taught himself an E chord to start his musical journey. In his later years, he played drums and became a preacher.

He often quoted Matthew 16:26 from the Bible: “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?”

Haskins will be posthumously inducted into the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame on June 3.

He is predeceased by ex-wife Estelle Haskins; his sisters, Mildred Burns and Mary Haskins; daughter Stephanie “Buff” Haskins; and son Michael James. He is survived by ex-wife Lorraine Haskins of Warren, Michigan; sister Julia Drew of Plainfield; daughters Michelle Fields of Allentown, Pennsylvania.; Crystal White (Andrew) of Hopelawn; son Nowell Scott (Kina) of Edison; stepson Diaz Dabney of Warren, Michigan; and 33 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Shiloh Baptist Church is located on 515 W. Fourth St. Rev. Dr. Danielle Brown is the senior pastor.
