Memorial scheduled for Polk County Deputy Blane Lane, who was killed by friendly fire

A memorial service will be held for a Polk County sheriff's deputy who was killed by friendly fire earlier this week.

A service for 21-year-old Blane Lane will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Victory Church, 1401 Griffin Road in Lakeland. There will be no public viewing or gravesite service.

Law enforcement honors including a helicopter flyover, taps, bagpiper and three-shot volley will be outside the church immediately after the service.

What happened: Polk sheriff's deputy killed by friendly fire serving warrant in Polk City

Lane was killed Oct. 4 while serving an arrest warrant to Cheryl Lynn Williams, 46, for failure to appear in court. Williams was wanted for a felony methamphetamine charge on Foxtown South in Polk City.

Two deputies who entered the residence opened fire after Williams confronted them with a weapon drawn, according to Sheriff Grady Judd. The weapon was later determined to be a BB gun.

Williams was shot twice and taken to Lakeland Regional Hospital for treatment. She has been placed under arrest and will be booked into Polk County Jail once she is released from the hospital, where she is in stable condition.

Williams faces 13 felony charges: second-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, three counts of aggravated assault on law enforcement officer, three counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, three counts of resisting arrest, two counts of possession of ammunition by a convicted felon and possession of methamphetamine.

Upon further search of the Foxtown South residence, Polk deputies say they found three guns displayed on a wall rack in a hallway: a Marlin model a Marlin model 99M1, .22-caliber rifle with scope; a Connecticut Valley Arms, Inc. single-shot, 12-gauge shotgun and a bolt-action .410 shotgun with one live round in the chamber.

Williams was staying at the residence with Joseph Larry Albritton, Jr., 55, and Donald Mathis, 72. The men were arrested and charged with three felony counts possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and five felony counts possession of ammunition by a convicted felon. Albritton also was charged with violation of probation.

Mathis faces an additional felony charge of possession of meth as Polk detectives said they found a small plastic bag in his bedroom with a substance that tested positive for the drug.

In lieu of flowers, Lane's family has requested donations to Polk Sheriff's Charities, Inc. be made in his memory. Donations can be made by visiting polksheriff.org/donate and in the dropdown menu, select “To PSCI in lieu of flowers in memory of Deputy Sheriff Blane Lane.”
