A celebration of life will take place Thursday for former Palm Coast City Council Member Holsey Moorman, who served as a one-star brigadier general in the U.S. Army, according to a press release from the city.

Moorman, who represented Palm Coast District 1 from 2007 to 2011, died Feb. 7. He was 84.

Moorman achieved  his brigadier one-star rank with the U.S. Army in April 1995, and eight years before that he served the Army at the Pentagon, specializing in human resources, special forces manpower, personnel policy integration, and equal opportunity programs, according to the release.

Moorman was appointed in April 1994 by then-New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman as the deputy adjutant general for the New Jersey National Guard and served six years in that position.

Moorman also earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and human resources from Park University in Parkville, Missouri. He earned a number of awards and several honorable Army designations, the release stated.

“Adding Palm Coast City Council member to his credentials brought General Moorman tremendous pride. His knowledge and faith in the local military and African-American community ensured his passionate participation across many of Palm Coast’s neighborhoods,” the release stated.

Moorman was a member of both the African American Cultural Society and the Mount Calvary Baptist Church of Palm Coast. He was also a member of the Advent Health Foundation Board and the NAACP.

”And his Palm Coast community will forever be grateful for his commitment as a public servant – once again with grace, gentleness, integrity and intelligence,” the release stated.

Moorman was defeated by a narrow margin in his reelection bid in 2011 by former council member Bill McGuire.

Moorman is survived by his wife, Carrie, and son, Gary Wayne Moorman, of Ashburn, Virginia, and other family members, according to his obituary.

A celebration of his life takes place at 11 a.m. Thursday at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 75 Pine Lakes Parkway S., Palm Coast. The Rev. Edwin Coffie, pastor, is the eulogist.

Visitation will be one hour prior. Holsey will be laid to rest at 9 a.m., Friday, Feb. 17, at the Jacksonville National Cemetery.

In lieu of floral arrangements, the Moorman family generously requests donations be submitted to Mount Calvary's Capital Campaign or Scholarship Fund c/o Holsey Moorman.
