Memphis baseball coach Daron Schoenrock to retire after 2022 season

Daron Schoenrock, who has been the baseball coach at Memphis since 2005, will retire after the 2022 season.

This season will mark Schoenrock's 18th leading the Tigers and 36th overall as a collegiate coach. He's the second-longest tenured coach in program history behind Bobby Kilpatrick, who was at Memphis for 21 seasons.

Schoenrock's record of 437-504 is also second-most behind Bobby Kilpatrick's 653 wins.

"It has been an absolute thrill to lead this Memphis Tigers baseball program for the past 17 years," Schoenrock said in a school release. "The relationships with over 190 players, 32 different staff members, and their commitment to excellence in representing the University of Memphis in a first class way on and off the field are things I will forever be grateful for. Once a Tiger, Always a Tiger!"

Prior to being hired at Memphis, Schoenrock was the pitching coach at Mississippi State (2002-04), Georgia (2000-01) and Kentucky (1998-99).

Schoenrock was Conference USA Coach of the Year in 2013 and led the Tigers to eight 30-win seasons. In 2007, the Tigers reached the NCAA regionals for first time since 1994.

Under Schoenrock's watch, Memphis has had 34 players play professional. All-American catcher Hunter Goodman was drafted last year in the fourth round of the MLB Draft by the Colorado Rockies.

"Rock is a perfect example of the impact a coach can make on student-athletes," Tigers athletic director Laird Veatch said. "Not only has he prepared his teams for success on the field, but he has demonstrated a true commitment to being part of the community and helping touch the lives of those around us. We wish him all the best in retirement after one more season as Tigers skipper.

The Tigers begin their season Feb. 18 hosting a three-game series against Valparaiso at FedExPark.
