Memphis basketball: Freshman Ian Granja hits the transfer portal | Report

Memphis basketball wing Ian Granja entered the transfer portal Friday, according to verbalcommits.com.

The 6-foot-7 freshman from Spain played in just five games for the Tigers in 2022-23. Logging just 12 total minutes, Granja was only 1-for-6 from the field. His lone basket came late in Memphis' blowout win over Tulane at the AAC tournament earlier this month in Fort Worth. Granja committed to the Tigers last August after spending the previous year at Get Better Academy in Prague.

Granja did not play in any of the Tigers' first 12 games and appeared to be headed toward a redshirt year. He made his Memphis debut on Dec. 21, late in a blowout win over Alabama State. Coach Penny Hardaway said Granja expressed a desire to play.

“That’s something he decided to do," Hardaway said. "That wasn’t something where I said, ‘Hey, I’m gonna take your redshirt year.’ He was like, ‘I wanna play.’”

Granja is currently the only Tiger from the 2022-23 roster to have hit the transfer portal. Earlier this week, center Kaodirichi Akobundu-Ehiogu announced his intentions to begin his professional career. Last offseason, Memphis lost six players to the transfer portal.
