Memphis basketball hires Garrett Kelly as director of operations

Memphis basketball coach Penny Hardaway has hired Garrett Kelly as director of basketball operations, The Commercial Appeal confirmed Friday.

Kelly succeeds Rodney Hamilton, who left the Tigers in April for an assistant coach position at Northwestern State after four seasons in Memphis.

Hardaway has at least two openings remaining on his staff (strength and conditioning coach and equipment manager). It's also unclear whether Hall of Famer Larry Brown will return to Memphis for a second season and, if so, in what capacity after serving as an assistant coach last season.

Kelly comes to Memphis from Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Georgia, where he served as coach of the Eagles' boys basketball team that finished 20-9.

Kelly's coaching career began at Division III Catholic University in Washington, D.C., where he was an assistant for the 2010-11 season. He spent two seasons at Radford, first as video coordinator then as director of basketball operations.

Kelly, a native of Asheville, N.C., also worked at Radford as director of basketball operations. He began his playing career as a walk-on at Loyola University in Maryland in 2007, before earning a scholarship before his senior season.
