Memphis basketball schedule 2022-23: 5 SEC teams, including Vanderbilt, Auburn, Alabama

Memphis basketball will open the 2022-23 season on Nov. 7 with its first game at Vanderbilt in 25 years.

The matchup with the Commodores is one of five on the Tigers' nonconference schedule – released by the school Thursday – versus SEC opponents. The Tigers will also host Ole Miss (Dec. 3) and Texas A&M (Dec. 17), while facing Auburn (Dec. 10) in Atlanta and Alabama (Dec. 13) in Tuscaloosa.

Tip-off times and broadcast details will be announced at a later date.

“Our nonconference schedule was designed to challenge our team, as well as give Tiger nation some exciting home games and the chance to travel regionally to Nashville, St. Louis, Tuscaloosa and Atlanta,” coach Penny Hardaway said in a press release. “We continue to work each and every day this offseason to build on last season’s successes.”

Memphis will make the trip up I-55 for its second game to face Saint Louis on Nov. 15 – the first time in 30 years the Tigers have opened the season with back-to-back true road games.

The Tigers' first home game is set for Nov. 20, when they will welcome VCU to FedExForum for the first time. Memphis last played the Rams on Nov. 27, 2020, at the Crossover Classic in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The last time VCU visited Memphis was Feb. 25, 1992, the first season the program played its home games inside The Pyramid. Hardaway, then a freshman with the Tigers, led his team to an 85-58 victory with 16 points, 11 assists and five rebounds.

Also included on the home schedule are a pair of exhibition games (Christian Brothers, Oct. 23, and Andre Turner's Lane College, Oct. 30) and a contest against Alabama State (Dec. 21), which concludes nonconference play. Tony Madlock, who spent three seasons as an assistant under Hardaway at Memphis and played for the Tigers alongside Hardaway, is in his first season as head coach at Alabama State.

The American Athletic Conference schedule will be announced at a later date. The Tigers will play home-and-home series with Houston, Cincinnati, SMU, UCF, Wichita State, Temple, South Florida and Tulane while traveling to Tulsa and hosting East Carolina.
