Memphis faces more winter weather, including freezing rain and icy road conditions

A winter weather advisory today and almost 60-degree weather next week. What could be more Memphis?

Thursday's weather brings freezing rain before 4 p.m. and then regular rain after that. There is a chance for fog this evening. The day will have a high of 34 and cloudy skies.

This evening will have a 20% chance of rain before 7 p.m. and a low of around 20 degrees. There will likely be a freeze overnight because of the rain combined with the low temperatures.

Memphis under a winter weather advisory

A winter weather advisory has been issued for Shelby County from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday. According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain will create a light glaze of ice.

The ice will make roads, bridges and walkways extremely slippery. When driving, give extra room to slow down and extra time to get to your destination.

Memphis road conditions

Road conditions are weary at best with the current weather conditions. There have been no official road closures due to extreme ice. Drivers are advised to continue to use caution when braking and accelerating to ensure they do not spin out.

The Memphis Police Department is still operating under the inclement weather crash policy. It asks drivers to only call emergency services if a vehicle crash results in injuries. Should a collision happen, drivers should:

  • Exchanges names, addresses, phone numbers, insurance information and tag numbers of the vehicles involved.

  • Take photographs of the damage and tag numbers of vehicles involved.

  • Both drivers should call the nearest police station or the Memphis Police Traffic Office to report the crash within 5 days.
