Memphis football adds commitments from LB Tyler Murray, DB Joseph Norwood

Memphis stayed busy by adding two commitments with transfer Tyler Murray, a linebacker from Charlotte, and defensive back Joseph Norwood, who was at New Mexico Military Institute.

Murray confirmed his commitment to The Commercial Appeal. Norwood's commitment was reported by Rivals and while he didn't tweet out a statement, he has the word "Family" as his Twitter background photo with the M as the Tigers logo.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Murray, a senior, started all 12 games at Charlotte and had a team-high 79 tackles last season. He also earned his second consecutive All-Conference USA honorable mention selection.

"Memphis has a great culture and a great atmosphere. I wanted to be a part of getting Memphis back on the map," said Murray, who began his career at Troy from 2017-18 after signing out of Baldwin High in Jacksonville, Florida.

He also has a connection with Tigers special teams coordinator Charles Bankins. Bankins coached in the same capacity at Charlotte in 2020, Murray's first season there.

The 5-11, 180-pound Norwood, who'll be a junior next season, helped lead New Mexico Military Institute to the NJCAA national championship. The Chattanooga native led all NJCAA players with 10 interceptions while adding 47 tackles and four pass breakups.

Norwood was a four-star at Brainerd and was committed to Tennessee in 2018 but decommitted. He eventually signed with UMass and appeared in 16 games before transferring during the 2019 season.

Murray adds depth to a linebacker corps needing to replace both JJ Russell and Thomas Pickens. The Tigers return senior Xavier Cullens and junior Cole Mashburn while adding a junior college transfer in Warren Peeples.

Norwood would join a secondary needing to replace defensive back Jacobi Francis but returns safeties Quindell Johnson and Rodney Owens.
