Memphis football hires Tim Cramsey as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach

Memphis officially hired Tim Cramsey as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on Thursday.

Cramsey was Marshall's offensive coordinator the past four seasons. The Thundering Herd averaged 456.5 yards and 33.0 points last season, which was 16th and 30th in the country, respectively.

Cramsey takes over from Kevin Johns, who was hired at Duke this month in the same capacity.

“My family and I are very excited to be a part of the Memphis football program,” Cramsey said in a release. “I appreciate Coach (Ryan) Silverfield for the opportunity and look forward to being a part of the program. I’m excited to work with the rest of the staff to continue the winning tradition at Memphis."

Marshall (7-6) had four games with at least 44 points but had fewer than 30 points in four of its last five games. Quarterback Grant Wells threw for 3,535 yards and 16 touchdowns with 13 interceptions but transferred to Virginia Tech this month.

Marshall also finished among the Conference USA's top five rushing offenses in each of the last four seasons. Running back Rasheen Ali was named a Freshman All-American by the Football Writers Association of America.

Cramsey has a solid history with young quarterbacks. Wells was named Conference USA Freshman of the Year in 2020 and Isaiah Green was the C-USA Freshman of the Year in 2018.

That'll be important as he comes to an offense led by Seth Henigan, who was also named a Freshman All-American. Cramsey could be overseeing another quarterback battle with Grant Gunnell returning after missing last season due to a leg injury.

Cramsey also inherits an offense that has to replace its top two playmakers in receiver Calvin Austin III and tight end Sean Dykes. Memphis' 137.1 rushing yards per game were its fewest since averaging 84.0 yards in 2011.
