Memphis Grizzlies' Dillon Brooks gets another technical foul — and another suspension

Dillon Brooks is back on the NBA's naughty list.

The Memphis Grizzlies' resident pest and the league's leader in technical fouls picked up his 18th technical midway through the third quarter of the team's home game against the Dallas Mavericks.

Brooks drove past Dallas star Kyrie Irving and then jammed in a left-handed flush over forward Maxi Kleiber. Brooks proceeded to yell in Irving's direction and gestured toward the Mavericks' bench in a taunting manner. That was enough to warrant a technical foul from veteran referee Tony Brothers.

Brooks will now serve another one-game suspension when the Grizzlies play the Houston Rockets at FedExForum Wednesday, a game the team is hoping will mark Ja Morant's return to the court from his own eight-game suspension.

Per NBA rules, after a player receives their 16th technical foul, they are fined $5,000 for every additional technical foul and suspended for one game on every second technical foul.

"It's just paper," Brooks said. "The media gave me the villain role, so I'm just taking it and doing what I need to do with it."

Brooks was previously levied an automatic one-game suspension upon reaching 16 technical fouls for the season in the Grizzlies' road loss at Denver on March 4. He was forced to miss a Memphis loss at the Los Angeles Clippers on March 6.

Brooks received his 17th technical foul in the Grizzlies' win over the San Antonio Spurs last Friday. He was also given a $35,000 fine by the NBA for shoving a cameraman on the sideline when Memphis lost at Miami last week.

The Grizzlies have the option to request that the NBA rescind Brooks' technical foul from Monday's game against Dallas upon review, but coach Taylor Jenkins sounded skeptical that the team's appeal would work. [Tuesday afternoon update: It didn't.]

"We'll see," Jenkins said after Memphis completed a 16-point comeback in its 112-108 win over the Mavericks, "but this might be a hard one to get back."

Brooks finished with just nine points in Monday's game but his defense was instrumental in containing Irving, who was held scoreless while going 0 for 8 from the floor in the fourth quarter.
