Memphis-Shelby County Schools to be closed Monday due to ongoing power outages

All Memphis-Shelby County Schools will be closed Monday, Feb. 7, according to the district, due to ongoing power outages. Before and after school activities are also canceled.

A large number of district buildings and schools are without power, while others are having issues with HVAC systems and trees and debris, according to a news release sent out Sunday night.

"Furthermore, when MLGW reports thousands of customers without electricity, we know that means a large number of our more than 100,000 students and 6,000 teachers are impacted," read the release. "Our thoughts go out to these families tonight, and we hope everyone is prioritizing their safety. We look forward to being back in the classroom as soon as possible."

The district office will still be open as scheduled.

Earlier in the day, MLGW officials said 45 school-associated meters were still without power. Some schools may have more than one meter, they said.

Bartlett City Schools, Lakeland School System and Collierville Schools all had plans to be in session Monday.
