Memphis weather: Some area schools to close early Friday

Memphis-area schools are closing early Friday ahead of the possibility severe storms, tornadoes and hail Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.

Memphis-Shelby County Schools will dismiss early, with schools starting at 7:15 a.m. dismissing at 12:15 p.m.; schools starting at 8:15 a.m. dismissing at 1 p.m.; and schools starting at 9:15 a.m. dismissing at 1:45 p.m. Afterschool activities and Y-Care will also be canceled.

DeSoto County School District will be dismissing an hour early due to the weather.

Arlington Community Schools has said it will not be closing early but all afterschool activities, including Arlington High’s theater performance of "Seussical" and a baseball game, will be canceled.

Bartlett City School will also be canceling all after school activities.

Beginning at 3 p.m. Friday until 2 a.m. Saturday, the Mid-South will see the highest risk of severe weather with a high chance for strong storms, according to NWS Memphis. Storms could be capable of producing strong tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail.

From Friday morning until midnight, Memphis will see thunderstorms, showers and wind gusts blowing between 30- 50 mph, NWS Memphis said. Temperatures Friday will range from the high at 77 degrees to the low at 56 degrees, according to the weather service.

NWS Memphis also issued a wind advisory beginning at 7 a.m. Friday until 1 a.m. Saturday.
